ABS Eagle OSV User Guide v

1 Introduction
1.1 OSV Structures Application
ABS Eagle OSV Structures is an application to be used for design and plan review of all offshore
support vessels. The application is designed to be used in close conjunction with ABS Rules for
Building and Classing Offshore Support Vessels (OSV Rules).

1.1.1 Application Capabilities

OSV empowers users create projects that can be saved on a local system. After the project is
created, the user may follow a workflow tree to check each individual module in accordance with
the OSV Rules or jump directly to any module of corresponding structural member without going
through other modules. After completing execution of a module, the OSV program can output
calculation results in PDF format. All of the calculations may be combined into a single PDF file
after the applicable modules are finished.

1.1.2 User Responsibility

In various stages of project data input, OSV evaluates data against requirements of the Rules.
Determining adjustments to the structures' data such that structures comply with the requirements
of the Rules is the user's responsibility.

1.2 OSV Structures User Documentation Set

OSV user documentation consists of four manuals:
• OSV User Guide
• OSV Parameter Reference Guide
• Modeler for OSV User Guide
• Stiffener Library for OSV User Guide

1.2.1 OSV User Guide

The OSV User Guide is a guide through the general use of the OSV application. It explains how
to set up the environment, add, modify and deleted projects, etc. In short it is the guide to the
specific actions to be taken for the OSV application.

1.2.2 OSV Parameter Reference Guide

The OSV Parameter Reference Guide is a guide to the parameters that make up the data tables for
the OSV application.
The parameter reference guide is a general reference, not a specific identifier of each parameter in
each table. Access to and mastery of the information in the Rules is of paramount importance in
using OSV.

1.2.3 Modeler for OSV User Guide

The Modeler for OSV User Guide is a guide leads the user through the use of the ABS Hull
Girder Structural Analysis application, as it has been customized for use with OSV. The guide
provides help needed to import or define cross sections for use with an OSV project, as well as
instructions for saving and importing such cross section data into an OSV project.

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 1

1.2.4 Stiffener Library for OSV User Guide
The Stiffener Library for OSV User Guide leads the user through the use of the ABS Stiffener
Library application, as it has been customized for use with OSV. The guide provides help needed
to select and define stiffeners for use with an OSV project, as well as instructions for saving and
importing stiffener data into an OSV project.

2 ABS Eagle OSV User Guide

2 OSV Startup and User Interface
This section explains how to start the OSV Structures application (which will hereafter be
referred to as OSV) and outlines the major features of the user interface.

2.1 Starting the OSV Application

After successfully installing and licensing OSV, as explained in the Release Notes of the
application, start the application by clicking the OSV icon on the desktop:

2.2 Major Features of the OSV User Interface

After OSV has been started and either a new project has been created or and existing project has
been opened, as explained in Section 3, Working with Projects, the main OSV screen is displayed
for use in the analysis of a vessel, as illustrated below:

The following sections explain each of the major features named:

2.2.1 Help and Logout Links

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 3

At the upper right on the application banner, these two buttons, \provide the user with access to
• Help, which opens this manual, the ABS Eagle OSV User Guide
• Logout, which provides a graceful and controlled method for exiting the application and
ensuring that it shuts down properly

2.2.2 Project Identification

This section provides a convenient location to view the Project Name, the Vessel Name, the Rule
Year, and the Unit System being used, regardless of the section in the Project Workflow being
input and processed.

2.2.3 Project Toolbar

This set of command buttons provides access to much of the functionality in the OSV application.
Buttons in the toolbar are explained in the following table:

This part of the Section: [Name Section] tab contains values calculated by OSV Rules at the time
the cross section was imported. These values are read only, and can only be alter by changing the
values in the modeling application and re-importing the cross section.

26 ABS Eagle OSV User Guide

5.2 Define and Import Cross Sections Using Modeler
The Modeler program has been developed to facilitate entry of cross section data with greater
ease than has been available to users. It is intuitive and very useful because of its excellent use of
cross section outline and internal shape.

5.2.1 Open Modeler

Modeler can be opened either from the Hull Girder Section workflow or from the toolbar of cross
section already imported from the Modeler.

5.2.1.1 Open Modeler from the Hull Girder Section Workflow

1. In the Hull Girder section, click the Launch Modeler button.

The Modeler program opens.

If no cross sections have been defined using Modeler, the screen will be a blank grid.
If cross sections have been defined already, the screen will open with the Modeler interface
displaying information about those cross sections.
2. Using the Modeler User Guide, which is installed automatically with Modeler in an OSV
installation, create one or more cross sections, define the appropriate geometry, and assign
plate, stiffeners, spaces, and EPPs as needed to reflect the vessel or proposed vessel at the
identified cross section locations from AP to FP.

5.2.1.2 Open Modeler from an Opened Data Table

If a cross section is already opened as a data table, Modeler can be opened from the toolbar at the
top of the cross section.
1. At the top of the data table, click the Open Modeler icon.

The Units message may be displayed:

2. Click Yes.
Modeler opens for cross section defining operations.

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 27

5.2.2 Define Cross Sections in Modeler
Modeler automatically installs with the application. Included with the Modeler installation is the
OSV 2D Modeler User Guide.
Following the direction and explanations in the OSV 2D Modeler User Guide, create cross
sections, define geometry, and assign plate, stiffeners, spaces, and EPPs as needed to reflect the
vessel or proposed vessel at the identified cross section locations.
As needed while a cross section is being defined, and/or after cross section development is
complete, import the cross section(s) into OSV Rules for evaluation against the rules. That
process is explained in the section that follows.

5.2.3 Import Cross Sections from Modeler to OSV Rules

After cross sections have been defined in Modeler, they can be imported into OSV Rules for
evaluation by ABS Rules.
1. In the Hull Girder Section data table, click the Import Modeler Data icon.

2. A window listing both applied cross sections and section(s) available for import from
Modeler is displayed:

28 ABS Eagle OSV User Guide

3. Click the Select check box for each of the cross sections that are to be imported into OSV
Rules.

4. Click Import to OSV Rules.

A message indicates that the data for the import is being processed. Movement of light
among the gray tabs indicates ongoing calculations in the import process:

After the calculations have been completed, another message indicates that the cross
sections have been imported into OSV Rules:

5. Click OK.
The cross sections are imported, as per the following:
6. OSV imports stiffener library XML available in the same project directory. This import will
be done automatically by the system without user intervention.

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 29

7. The tank list is imported in OSV. If any conflict occurs during Tank data import, system
overrides all the conflicted Tanks. Modeler data will come to OSV.
8. All selected Cross Section(s) will be imported in OSV.
9. OSV generates vertical shear stress values and maps those calculations to each EPP imported
from Modeler.
10. Hull Girder section modulus calculations are performed as per OSV design.
The cross sections are displayed as rows on the Hull Girder Section data table:

Note that the first cross section had already been input from work done in HGSA. The
other three cross sections are indicated as having been developed in Modeler.

5.2.4 Specific Information about Cross Sections Imported from Modeler

5.2.4.1 Shear Forces and Section Modulus

When one or more cross sections are imported from Modeler to OSV Rules, shear force and
section modulus calculations are performed automatically in the background for the imported
cross section(s).

5.2.4.1.1 Display of Calculation Results

The results of those calculations may or may not be displayed on the specific data table rows.
However, they are always performed, to the extent that data is provided for performing those
calculations.
For instance, in the following illustration, three cross sections have been imported, but Hull
Girder strength and section modulus values are not displayed:

Although the calculated values are shown only for a cross section previously imported from
HGSA, the other three sections are present in OSV Rules data.

5.2.4.2 No Duplication of Cross Sections or Tanks

To maintain integrity of imported data, OSV Rules does not allow the import of duplicated data,
already imported from Modeler, without the express agreement of the user.

30 ABS Eagle OSV User Guide

If the user attempts to import a cross section or tank from Modeler, it is identified a Conflicted if
it meets one or both of the following conditions:
• A cross section of the same name and XAP/XFP has already been imported during the
session or imported and saved from a previous session.
• A tank of the same name and location relative to the ongoing cross sectional position
along the longitude of the vessel has already been imported from Modeler.
If one or both of the above conditions are met, before any import operations are started, the
following message is displayed:

Before the import operation can proceed, the user must select one of two choices:

Overwrite If the user selects Overwrite, the cross section and or tank
data is imported into OSV Rules, as explained in Section
5.2.3, Import Cross Sections from Modeler to OSV Rules.
Any conflicted data is overwritten and replaced.

Skip If the user selects Overwrite, the cross section and or tank
data is imported into OSV Rules, as explained in Section
5.2.3, Import Cross Sections from Modeler to OSV Rules.
However, any conflicted data from the cross section(s) and
or tank(s) is skipped, and existing data already in OSV
Rules is used for calculations.

After clicking either the Overwrite or Skip radio button, click the Import button. Import and
associated calculations are performed as described above.

5.2.4.3 Modification of Data Imported from Modeler

5.2.4.3.1 Date in Cross Sections from Modeler

Data in the data tables of cross sections imported from Modeler can be modified by the use of the
Edit context menu command.
1. With a cross section data table open, right-click a row.
A context menu is displayed.

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 31

2. Click Edit.
The fields that can be edited are clearly marked with input boxes that either contain
current values or are blank.

3. Press the Tab key to move from field to field to make the desired edits.
NOTE: The fields y1, z1, y2, and z2 cannot be edited by the user, but are protected as read-
only, as long as the cross section has the CS Property of Modeler Input.
4. When edits are complete, click outside the row to close editing.
5. Click the Save button on the OSV Toolbar.

The changes are saved to the OSV project.

6. Click the Recalculate All Structures button.

The changes made in the data table are applied to the entire OSV Rules project.
NOTE: Changes made to data tables in OSV Rules are not propagated to data tables in 2D
Modeler. If such changes are needed for future imports, they must be made and saved
directly in 2D Modeler and saved.

5.2.4.3.2 Data in Cross Sections Copied from Modeler Cross Sections

If a cross section is copied by the use of the Copy or Copy with Detail context menu command,
then pasted as a new cross section, it is given the CS Property of User Input, and all fields can
then be edited.

32 ABS Eagle OSV User Guide

As with Modeler cross sections, no changes are propagated to Modeler. All changes that are
desired to be applied to the model in Modeler must be made in that program.

5.2.4.4 Exchange of Data between OSV Rules and Modeler

Exchange of data between OSV Rules and Modeler is governed by the following design
principles:

5.2.4.4.1 General Data

When general data—Project Information and Ship Information— is generate or modified in OSV
Rules, and the Update button is clicked, that information is updated to Modeler.

5.2.4.4.2 Stiffener Data

Although individual changes can be made by users to user-input stiffeners, if those changes are to
be applied across the board to all associated applications, they must be made through the Stiffener
Library application itself, then saved into OSV Rules and applied to project generate through
invocation from OSV Rules.

5.2.4.4.3 Specific Cross Section Data

All but the fields identified in Section 5.2.4.3, Modification of Data Imported from Modeler, can
be modified in OSV Rules, but such modifications are not propagated back to Modeler. That is to
say, the flow of cross section data between Modeler and OSV Rules is one-way, except for
Project General Data and Ship General Data, which can be applied from OSV Rules to the
controlling files for Modeler.
However, if even those kinds of change are to be applied to cross sections imported from
Modeler, they must first be saved in Modeler, applied to projects and cross sections there, and
then re-imported into OSV Rules.

10 Generating Reports
The user can generate a report at any time in the course of the analysis that such a report is
needed or desired.

10.1 Report Contents

Reports are generated as PDF documents that provide the information specified in the report
requests.
The scope of that information depends upon the location from which the report is called and the
selections the user makes from possible options to select.
Each report has the following sections:
• Title page
• Table of Contents
• General Ship Information
• Specifically Reported Structure(s)

10.2 Opening and Saving Reports

As each report is generated, a File Download window is presented, which identifies the name of
the report and provides three options with regard to the use of the report:

Option Description

Open the report directly from the window, in the browser.

Save the report for transfer to another person or inspection at a

later time. It can be opened with Adobe® Reader, a free
application.

Cancel the action. Do not open or save the report.

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 57

10.3 PDF Report Sources
Reports can be generated from two locations:
• Report can be generated directly from a data table, specific to the data presented in the table.
• Through the Generate Full Report application toolbar button, reports can be generated for any
part of the analysis

10.3.1 Reports from Tables

For certain tables, notably all tables in the Plate & Stiffener Members and Hull Structures
workflow sections, the table toolbar provides a command for a report. For example, the following
graphic illustrates a table for Inner Bottom Plating and Stiffener – Plating.

When that command is clicked, the table that opens has detailed structure data.

11 Tables of Data Assessed Against the Rules

This section describes how to access and use data tables associated with structural members at
identified structural locations along the vessel.
Those tables can be used for at least the following two purposes:
1. To check whether members entered in cross sections created with Modeler or created by
manual input conform to the requirement of the Rules.
2. To create a member being considered for inclusion in the model and evaluate it against
the Rules, before creating in a saved cross section as an actual part of the model.

11.1 Specific Structures Assessed with OSV

The structure assessments available with OSV are organized in the application in two ways:
• By Plate & Stiffener Members
• By Vessel Structures
These ways of viewing structures that are assessed against the rules provide the same
information, but from different organization schemes, as best serves the analysis and the
preferences of the individual user.
The sections below explain how to access the information.

11.1.1 Access through Plates & Stiffener Members

The first option in the work flow to access data tables is through the Plates & Stiffener Members
section.

ABS Eagle OSV User Guide 61

This view offers access to data tables as a group of structures associated with Plates and another
group of structures associated with Stiffeners. Each of these lists of groups can be viewed by use
of the scroll bar to the right of the group.
A single click on linked title for a structure brings up the data table for that structure. If there are
no instances of that group in the model, a message window will indicate that:

If instances are displayed, the user can deal with them as explained in the instructions below,
starting with Section 11.2, Components of a Data Table for Members and Structures.

62 ABS Eagle OSV User Guide

11.1.2 Access through Hull Structures
If it is more useful to access the data tables by hull structure than by plates and stiffeners, the user
can click the Hull Structures section of the workflow. The following view is displayed:

The data tables are made available either through a vertical scroll bar on the workflow or a
horizontal scroll bar on the display area.
Again, a single click brings a data table to view, in which all operations explained in Section
11.2, Components of a Data Table for Members and Structures are available to the user.

11.2 Components of a Data Table for Members and Structures

Each section with a data table has a set of controls and navigation that allow data entry, analysis,
and reporting. The following graphic illustrates those components:
