DISCUSSION:
Following are the resources required for this experiment
• Computer
• Packet Tracer
Hub:
1. A hub is typically the least expensive, least intelligent, and least
complicated.
2. Anything that comes in one port is sent out to the others.
3. Every computer connected to the hub "sees" everything that
every other computer on the hub sees.
4. The hub itself is ignorant of the data being transmitted.
Switch:
1. A switch does essentially what a hub does but more efficiently. By
paying attention to the traffic that comes across it, it can learn
where particular addresses are. For example, if it sees traffic from
machine A coming in on port 2, it now knows that machine A is
connected to that port and that traffic to machine A needs to only
be sent to that port and not any of the others.
2. The net result of using a switch over a hub is that most of the network traffic only goes
where it needs to rather than to every port. On busy networks this can make the network
significantly faster.
Types of Switches :
1. Switch-2950-24: It is a standalone, fixed-configuration, managed 10/100
switch providing user connectivity for small- to mid-sized networks. It
does not support add-in module.
2. Switch-2950T-24: It is a fixed-configuration, standalone switch that
provides wire-speed Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for
mid-sized networks. It does not support add-in modules.
3. Switch-2960-24TT: It is a fixed-configuration, standalone switch that
provides Wire speed Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for
mid-sized networks. It does not support add-in modules.
2. Numerous devices will appear and select PC from the devices and place it on the screen.
4. As we have more than two PCs we can not connect them directly we need a hub or a
switch for that.
5. So, to place hub go to bottom left and select hub and place it on the screen.
6. And to place switch go to bottom left and select switch and place it on the screen.
7. Now to make a connection we need wire so go to bottom left and there is a icon named
connection type, click on that and select automatic.
8. Note that the connection hub and switch is made by copper cross-over while the wire that
connects hub and PCs and switch and PCs is copper straight-through.
9. Now using the automatic wire connect those PCs and click on the PC to enter IP address.
11. Send a message from one PC to another to see if the network that we established was
successful or not.
LAB TASKS
Task#01(a) Connect Computers to the Hub
1. Connection to PC7 to PC9 through a cable
1. we can connect two computers directly but if we want to connect three or more PCs we
need hubs or switches.
2. We also learnt that hub broadcasts a message while switch sends message only to the
PC we want.
