Department of Electrical Engineering

BEEG1001 Session: 2019-20 Module II

Basic Electrical Engineering Common to all Sections Maximum Marks 25

Assignment 1
(Last Date of submission: 27-03-2020)

1. Define the following terms [3]

(a) Reluctance, (b) Magnetomotive force, (c) Permeability
2. Explain statistic induced emf and dynamic induced emf with suitable example. [2]
3. Write short notes on hysteresis and hysteresis loss. How can these losses be
minimized? [3]
4. A coil having 100 turns is immersed in a magnetic field that is varying uniformly
from 80 mWb to 30 mWb in 2 seconds. Find the induced voltage in the coil. [2]
5. For the electromagnet shown in the Figure, find [3]
a. the flux density in the core.
b. Sketch the magnetic flux lines and indicate their direction.
c. Indicate the north and south poles of the magnet.

6. Write similarities and dissimilarities between magnetic and electric circuit. [5]
7. A coil of insulated wire of 500 turns and resistance of 4Ω is closely wound on an iron
ring. The ring has a mean diameter of 0.25m and a uniform cross-sectional area of
700 mm2. Calculate the total flux in the ring when a dc supply of 6V is applied at the
ends of winding. Assume a relative permeability of 550. [3]
8. An iron ring of mean diameter 10 cm is uniformly wound with 2000 turns of wire.
When a current of 0.25 A is passed through the coil a flux density of 0.4 T is set up in
the iron. Find [4]
(a) the magnetic field intensity
(b) the relative permeability of the iron under these conditions.
