Writing Supplementary Material 1

The document provides a sample writing prompt asking the reader to imagine they received an email from their friend Ivan describing his unpleasant experience at an anime convention that was overcrowded with poor ventilation. It then provides a sample response email the reader could write back to Ivan describing their experience at the convention on a less crowded day where the situation had improved. The second part of the document provides another writing prompt asking the reader to imagine they work for the Department of Health and have been asked to write a review of a winning poem from a smoking prevention poetry competition.

Writing Practice (supplementary material)

Part A

For question 1, write about 200 words.

1. You have received an email from your friend. Ivan.

To: [email protected]
From: [email protected]
Date: 3 Aug 20XX
Subject: Hot Exhibition
Hi Chris,

I’ve been to the Ani-Com & Games Fair at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today. It
was a terrible experience. I couldn’t believe that it was deadly crowded even though I reached there
in the early morning! I needed to squeeze through the crowd to get to the booths. Worse still, the
ventilation was so poor that I felt dizzy shortly after I got in the hall. I saw some people sweat a lot,
a few of whom even needed to rest at the first-aid station.

I wasn’t in the mood to stay long. I heard that you’ll go to the exhibition on the last day of the event.
I hope the situation will be better for you.

Good luck!

Best,
Ivan

Two days later, you went to the exhibition as planned. You think that the situation was much better and
enjoyed the event.

Write a reply email to Ivan describing your time there and how the situation had improved.

For question 2, write about 400 words.

2. Learning English through Poems and Songs

The Tobacco Control Office of the Department of Health has initiated a campaign to prevent smoking, and
has held a poetry competition about it. The following is the winning entry:
Just have one

Light, light and catch the happiest spark!

Flutters and then burns –
smoke to fill your lungs.

A breath of contentment and another –

as years travel away, foreshortened
in this pastime.

Their end is fleeting as it goes out.

You work part-time for the Department, and are asked to write a review to be put on the Department’s
website to explain why the poem is worthy of winning the prize for the first place.

Write the review.
