Class Observation Report

The class observation report summarizes an English class for 9th grade students discussing the topic of plays. The teacher used a PowerPoint presentation to discuss different elements of plays like dramatic forms, settings, and genres. However, some students became distracted and the teacher spent the entire class lecturing without engaging students or assessing their understanding. Areas for improvement include breaking up the content into multiple classes, using images to engage students, monitoring student attention, providing feedback, and assessing learning outcomes. The observation provided insights into challenges of teaching and opportunities to improve classroom management and instructional methods.

Class Observation Report

Class or Course English 9 Grade/Year Level of Grade 9- Browning

Observed Class Observed
Date of Class February 27, 2018 Inclusive Time of 8:00 AM-8:50AM
Observation Observation
Name of Observer Louise I. Furio Signature of Observer
Objectives:

The focus of this observation is the teaching-learning process and the classroom
management of the teacher inside the class. The goal is to observe on how the teacher
handles unexpected situations in the classroom. This is also done to observe whether the
teacher provides instructional materials that are connected to the objectives or topic
and if these material contribute to the success or has a positive impact throughout the
discussion period. Also, I want to observe how the teacher interact, facilitate and provide
motivations to her students inside the classroom and how she motivates

Observation:

(The class swaps with other class that has television set in the room so that the teacher
can use her prepared PowerPoint Presentation for the discussion.)

The topic for the day is Play because it is part of their coming play presentation.

The class starts with a prayer lead by one student. The teacher wishes the students to
arrange their chairs and pick-up some litters inside the classroom. After settling down, the
teacher set-ups her laptop (television set is available, no need for projector). For the
teachers motivational activity, she asked the students if they are able to watch a play
before. She also asked the students if what the difference between play and a novel is.
Some students volunteered to answer but some keeps on talking their ideas with their
seatmates. With the use of her PowerPoint Presentation the teachers started to discuss
the topic about Play.

 She gave the definition of play. Asked some questions related to the topic and call
some student to share their ideas.
 The teacher discussed about the different Dramatic Forms and gives different
examples and gives further explanations to help the students understand it easily.
 After, the teacher also discussed about Setting and Staging. She shared her
personal experience from previous play presentation of other batch about it so that
they could relate it and use it on their coming play presentation.
 In the middle of the discussion, some students are talking to their seatmates and
somewhat causing to noise and murmuring inside the classroom.
 The teacher also talks about different Genre or Forms of Play.
 After, elements of drama was also discussed.
 She also added the Aristotle’s 6 Elements of Drama and the Literary Elements.
Overall, the whole discussion was good. But, one observation is that the teachjer keeps
on reading what is projected in the television. She does not call any of the student to read
the information presented. After the discussion, she reminds the student for their coming
play presentation and gives some tips or points to remember in preparation for their play.
And the class ends with a prayer and prepared their thing going back to their original
classroom.

Prospects:

As a student, the teacher’s way of discussing the topic was quite fast. With the entire
concept taught in just an hour, I guess it is too much. The teacher should choose
concepts that are useful for their presentation of play. Or she could chop the topics
discussed and not taught it in just one meeting. Giving more examples and simpler
definition could help her to discuss it in easier way. I believe, students in that class are
interested in the topic but get bored in the discussion because the teacher does all the
talking. For me, it is good to let the student read the definition and share some insights of
what is read because I know that the students know something.

Images or short video clip could also help the teacher to get the students’ attention. The
PowerPoint Presentation is helpful and for me, I appreciate it, but it should not replace the
teacher in the teaching process. The teacher could use guide words and do the further
explanation. It should help the teacher discuss the topic. I observed that the PowerPoint
Presentation is full of texts not with a single picture on it.

I also observed that the teacher does not monitor the whole class. I know it’s hard while
discussing but the teacher must move around the classroom to check if her students are
still with her or doing other stuff. During the whole time, the teacher stands at the front
and never leaves that spot. Therefore, some students at the back have their other stuffs
with them. And maybe, the attention of the teacher is in the front only not knowing that
she was not able to call students who’s seating at back.

With all these observation, I am not against the teacher but it is for the improvement of
everybody and it is for the student.

Issues:

1. Does not call the attention of busy students doing other stuffs
This one is included in classroom management, it is important to call the attention
of those students who are not listening for them to know that their attention is
needed or important in the discussion. It is also a respect for the teacher talking in
front of the classroom.
2. Teacher’s Feedback
It is important to compliment good deeds or action of the students. The teacher
should provide them affirmation after answering a question, giving ideas and
opinion, sharing experiences and others. Therefore, teacher must think of various
of affirmation not only “very good, thank you, etc.” The teacher must give clear
feedback on what or why is she giving affirmation. This may contribute to motivate
other student to recite and to get their attention. Giving such may also let them feel
that they are appreciated and their presence is felt inside the classroom. Though
their answer is wrong, it is also right to give them affirmation that should not hurt or
shame them.

3. Assessment after Discussion

Assessment is a very important process to know if the student should be able to
learn after the teaching-learning process. From my observation, the 50 minute
class was full of discussion alone and the teacher does not prepare any seatwork,
activity or quiz after the discussion. Maybe, time does not permit it to happen
because of the long discussion but maybe she could give them take-home activity
to assess if the student learns something from the discussion.

4. Instructional material (PowerPoint Presentation)

Using instructional materials is very important to aid and help a teacher in
delivering a topic. It serves as an attention catcher and gives motivation to the
learner. It also makes the job of a teacher easier. But, using it requires knowledge
that this should not replace a teacher in the process but it should only be the
teacher’s companion. Lie what I’d said before; the PPTX was full of text and
lengthy definition that is hard to understand. Pictures are also not present to the
presentation. This could have made every slide friendly.

Insights:

With the help of this observation, I had a chance to know what is happening in a real
classroom situation. It is very ideal to look on concepts and theories taught in our
professional education subjects but the truth is that it is very hard to follow it when we are
in the real situation already. There are a lot of thing to be considered.

For me, teachers are still the best visual aid inside the classroom but, nowadays, it is
important to get the students attention and help them keep on track in the discussion. It
can also add to higher number of student to learn and get the ideas or concepts fast. But,
preparing those materials is not easy. There are a lot of things to consider. One, it should
fit the learner so as the topic.

Teacher’s role inside the classroom is very important and it does not stop from it. It
continues outside and will always be part of teachers life as his obligation od duty to
ponder very students capabilities and potentials through good and harmonious
relationship that can be develop overtime.
