Vow
Jollibee has been creating and releasing commercials which establish a typical Filipino
moment and event where we could all significantly relate ourselves. One of which is Jollibee’s
Vow which was released four years ago as one of their Valentine’s Series in 2017. This
commercial has been tackling romance in the beginning not until its end comes where the guy
has been friend zoned, as the girl’s best friend and the woman ended up marrying another man.
It was a true story just as Jollibee states and it is just simply pity how they were not able to be
together despite the sequence of the clips on the commercial where the guy has been doing all
the hard works and efforts for the girl.
Taking into the itsy spectrum integrated on the commercial, the actor and the actress on
the video were like in their college days at the beginning of the clip and as the story went on,
they both had become young professionals who’s been sticking with each other. Well, probably
because they were apparently best friends. They both seem like to come from well-off
respective families with the fact that they had a magnificent wedding, the car which the woman
has been driving, the university field featured were the guy has been carrying loads of books
with his laptop slinging on his shoulder. Both seem to have that chemistry and it is completely
noticeable because of how compatible they were with the perceived similar status which has
been established in the beginning, right from the moment they had ordered in the counter with
food orders alike, up to how their personalities mingle.
The way that the guy has represented Filipino men just seem to be accurate in some
instances. To personally attest, I know a friend who had the same situation, which makes the
story on the commercial not an isolated case, and that’s why I believe that it may be a
representation of how romantic and how Filipino men can let go of their loved ones settling on
the label of being best friends. However, we can’t make it play for the entirety of the population
of Filipino men, because others are willing to go beyond their distance and limits just to fight for
what they love. On the other hand, with regards how he has stayed and been with the woman
putting off sacrifice, it simply shows how Filipino men has been seeing their role of protecting
those whom actually matter. That’s how “cheesy” that may sound. Same goes with the
character and portrayal of the girl, she has been that typical working modern Filipina who has
been trying to be stable on her own. A practical resolution somehow emphasizing women
empowerment.
The way that the commercial has actually made us think that the man was in love with
the woman is through their script, specifically that line from the early phase of the clip smashing
with romantic excitement stating, “It was in Jollibee. I told myself, she’s the one.” Add it up with
the, “From that day onwards, I already know you’re the one I want to spend the rest of my life
with. So to you I make this promise that I will be the man for you,” and a lot more lines,
seemingly everything on the script, pounds how the man sees the girl as a beloved other half in
the future. Further, those acts which he has been doing from start to end really sets the plot that
he is indeed in love with the girl. On the other hand, the gestures of the girl seem to come
similar with how the guy feels. Although she doesn’t have any lines or scripts, it’s her way of
dealing and treating with the guy which appears that she is in love with the guy as well.
However, we always have to take a look on the bigger picture, just like how the script writer
conceptualized the totality of the story, where it defines love as sacrifice, love being
unconditional, love as letting the person go to be able to make them happy even if that
happiness doesn’t directly means it includes you.
On a personal note, the ending was just heart-breaking simply because it is well-tailored
from the beginning that the characters are in love with each other. But, I like how it ended
because it given definition to a different kind of love, not just how cliché we see love in movies
and other dramas where two people are in love from beginning to end. It is just that, I personally
have not seen any sign that it will turn out how it ended because of the way we were set to the
atmosphere and mood of them having such passionate connection. Even if I were to be given a
chance to change or revise its ending, I’d still stick with the original which Jollibee conceptualize
because it creates impact with the unusual plot twist. Given that it is a commercial to promote
Jollibee products, that impact is much significant and serving its purpose. The video in its whole
sense advertised Jollibee products as multiple settings of the clips happened in Jollibee, the
initial encounter of the characters even happened in Jollibee. It just shows how Jollibee
witnesses a lot of momentous events, how it can be part of these circumstances, which can be
perceived simple, yet to the individuals, are very sentimental and remarkable. Thus, the
commercial accomplished its goal of conveying that Jollibee is an idyllic place where love and
friendship can be found and foster.
