This video discusses arithmetic sequences through defining them as sequences where each term is found by adding a constant to the previous term, called the common difference. It covers finding the common difference by subtracting terms, and the formula to find the nth term which is an = a1 + (n - 1)d, where an is the nth term, a1 is the first term, n is the term number, and d is the common difference. Several examples are worked through to demonstrate finding the common difference, nth term, and completing arithmetic sequences.

Good day!

My name is Mark Allen Pascual and this is my instructional video which tackles about Arithmetic
Sequence.

(next slide)

This is the study objectives for this instructional video.

The first thing we need to discuss is the definition which tells the basic information about arithmetic
sequence

Next is the common difference, this way we can able to find the common difference using the first term
of the sequence

Third, is finding the nth-term of the sequence. This will able us to find the nth-term using the formula
which will be discussed soon as we go through this lecture

And last are the Practice problems, these problems will able us to solve much complex problems about
arithmetic sequence

(next slide)

Now, Let's Start with the definition

(next slide)
A sequence in which a constant (d) can be added to each term to get the next term is called an
Arithmetic Sequence. And this constant is called the Common Difference.

(next slide)

Let's continue to the second part of the lecture, the common difference

(next slide)

To find the common difference (d), subtract any term from one that follows it.

As we can see to the diagram below, we see a sequence of 2, 5, 8, 11 and 14. Subtracting the second
term 5 to the first value 2, we get a common difference of 3. Also, if we subtract the third term 8 to the
second term 5, we also get the same common difference of 3. This also applies to the succeeding terms

(next slide)

Now, since we are able to determine the common difference, here are some examples that will help you
more understand how to get the common difference of the sequence

The first example, Find the first term and the common difference of each arithmetic sequence. 4, 9, 14,
19, 24

As we can observe the first term of the sequence is 4

Subtracting the second term 9 to the first term 4 we have the common difference of 5

(next slide)
Next set of sequence 34, 27, 20, 13, 6, -1, -8, . . .

We can observe that the first term of the sequence is 34

Subtracting the second term 27 to the first term 34 we have a common difference of -7

(next slide)

Next, we will proceed in finding the nth-term of the arithmetic sequence

(next slide)

The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is given by:

an = a1 + (n – 1) d

Wherein an is the value of the missing term, a1 is the first term, n is the position of the missing term and
d is the common difference

(next slide)

Now, we proceed to the examples

Find the 14th term of the arithmetic sequence 4, 7, 10, 13, . . .

Applying the formula an = a1 + (n – 1) d

we get a14 = 4 + (14 – 1) 3

subtracting 14 to 1 we get 13

then 4 + (13) times 3

multiply then we have 4 + 39 , so we get a value of 43.

Therefore the 14th term of the sequence is 43

(next slide)

Next example, Find the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence with first term of 5 and the common
difference is –6.

Applying the formula, we get a14 = 5 + (10 – 1) -6

Subtracting 10 to 1 we have 5 + 9 x -6

Multiply, we get 5 -54

And so we get a value of -49

Therefore the 10th term of the sequence is -49

(next slide)

To solve more problems relating arithmetic sequence here are some more practice problems for us to
solve relating to arithmetic sequence

(next slide)
In the arithmetic sequence 4, 7, 10, 13, …, which term has a value of 301?

Applying the formula, we replace an with 301 and the missing value is n which is the term being asked

so we have 301 = 4 + (n – 1) 3

multiply and we get 301 = 4 + 3n - 3

add like-terms we get 301 = 1 + 3n

Dividing 3 to both sides to get the value of n, we have 100

therefore, 301 is the 100th term of the sequence

(next slide)

This is the last example that we have for this video, Complete the first 5 terms of the arithmetic
sequence with first term of 5 and the common difference is –8

to determine the missing terms we need to solve for each term by adding the common difference

for the second term, we add 5 to the common difference -8 we get -3

for the third term we use the second term -3 added to -8 we get -11

for the fourth term, using the 3rd term -11 and add -8 we get -19

and last the fifth term we use the fourth term -19 and add -8 we get -27
To complete the first 5 terms of the sequence we have 5, -3, -11, -19, and -27

(next slide)

That's all for my instructional video about arithmetic sequences, thank you for listening and have a good
day
