1. Name two materials in which semi-conductors such as diodes and transistors are made of. What properties do
these materials have that they are considered as best semi-conductor materials?
Silicon and Germanium are used to make semi-conductors such as diodes and transistors. They are
effective semi-conductors because they have 4 valence electrons in their outermost shell which gives them the
ability to gain or lose electrons equally at the same time.
2. The capacitance units are given in farad (F), micro farad (uF), and picofarad (pF). Write the relation between the
three units and give an example for each conversion from one unit to another.
There are fixed resistor and variable resistor. Fixed resistor, the name itself says that it is a fixed resistor.
So, the values of the specific resistor cannot be change. Variable resistors on the other hand, have a variable
resistance that can either be change manually like in Potentiometers, or that which are controlled by external
actor like light or temperature.
The tolerance of the resistor is identified by the last color of the band. The minimum and the maximum
tolerance will depend on its color. For example, when resistor’s last band color is silver, then the minimum
tolerance is minus (-) 10% and the maximum is plus (+) 10% of the resistance.
4. Describe how three terminals or legs of a transistor (both PNP and NPN) are identified.
A transistor (either PNP or NPN) has 3 legs as shown below. The middle leg is known as the base. To
identify the two remaining legs, the use of multi-tester is needed. Setting it to the diode tester, then measuring
the resistances of each remaining legs with the base, the leg that has the higher resistance with the base is
known to be the collector, and the leg with a lower resistance is the emitter.
