1. Silicon and germanium are commonly used materials for semiconductors like diodes and transistors. They are effective semiconductors because they have 4 valence electrons, allowing them to easily gain or lose electrons. 2. Resistors are rated by their resistance value, tolerance, and wattage. Smaller resistors use colored bands to indicate value and tolerance due to their small size. Larger resistors directly print this information. 3. There are fixed and variable resistors. Fixed resistors have a set resistance value while variable resistors allow changing resistance manually or through external factors like light or temperature. 4. For transistors, the middle leg is the base. Using a multimeter in diode mode

1. Name two materials in which semi-conductors such as diodes and transistors are made of. What properties do
these materials have that they are considered as best semi-conductor materials?

Silicon and Germanium are used to make semi-conductors such as diodes and transistors. They are
effective semi-conductors because they have 4 valence electrons in their outermost shell which gives them the
ability to gain or lose electrons equally at the same time.

2. The capacitance units are given in farad (F), micro farad (uF), and picofarad (pF). Write the relation between the
three units and give an example for each conversion from one unit to another.

1 farad is equal to 1x1012 picofarad. 1 picofarad is equal to 1x10 -12 farad.

1 microfarad is equal to 1x10-6 farad. 1 picofarad is equal to 1x10 -6 microfarad.
1 microfarad is equal to 1x106 picofarad.
Examples:
F  uF & pF : 2.36 x 10-3 F uF  F & pF : 5432 uF
1 ×10 uF 6
1F
−3
2.36 ×10 F × =2360uF 5432uF × 6
=5.432 ×10−3 F
1F 1× 10 uF
−3 1 ×1012 pF 9 1× 106 pF 9
2.36 ×10 F × =2.36 ×10 5432uF × =5.432× 10 F
1F 1 uF

pF  F & uF : 9.21 x 1010 pF

1F
9.21 ×1010 pF × 12
=9.21 ×10−2 F
1×10 pF
10 1 uF
9.21 ×10 pF × 6
=9.21× 104 uF
1×10 pF
3. How are resistors rated? What are the types of resistor
The resistance value, tolerance, and wattage rating are generally printed onto the body of the resistor as
numbers or letters when the resistors body is big enough to read the print, such as large power resistors. But
when the resistor is small the specifications must be shown in some other manner as the print would be too
small to read. So, to overcome this, small resistors use colored painted bands to indicate both their resistive
value and their tolerance with the physical size of the resistor indicating its wattage rating. These colored
painted bands produce a system of identification generally known as a Resistors Color Code.

There are fixed resistor and variable resistor. Fixed resistor, the name itself says that it is a fixed resistor.
So, the values of the specific resistor cannot be change. Variable resistors on the other hand, have a variable
resistance that can either be change manually like in Potentiometers, or that which are controlled by external
actor like light or temperature.
The tolerance of the resistor is identified by the last color of the band. The minimum and the maximum
tolerance will depend on its color. For example, when resistor’s last band color is silver, then the minimum
tolerance is minus (-) 10% and the maximum is plus (+) 10% of the resistance.

4. Describe how three terminals or legs of a transistor (both PNP and NPN) are identified.
A transistor (either PNP or NPN) has 3 legs as shown below. The middle leg is known as the base. To
identify the two remaining legs, the use of multi-tester is needed. Setting it to the diode tester, then measuring
the resistances of each remaining legs with the base, the leg that has the higher resistance with the base is
known to be the collector, and the leg with a lower resistance is the emitter.
