Module 204 Unit 5 Kaylee Gentry
Module 204 Unit 5 Kaylee Gentry
Objectives:
Students will be able to determine the name of each rock and how it is formed
State Standards:
Standard 3.E.4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the composition of Earth and
the processes that shape features of Earth’s surface.
Context:
I am teaching this lesson to allow them to be familiar and master material that will be on the
standardized test they will need to take in the future. This lesson is a unique way to learn and
enjoy while working with other classmates and material. Students should be familiar with Earth
and its layers before this unit. That will help them better understand the formation of these rocks.
Once students have an understanding of the different types of rocks, we will focus on the
minerals that make up different rocks. Further in the lesson they will learn how fossils form in
these rocks and the different types of fossils that form.
Data:
The students will be grouped based off the scores of their pre lesson quiz. I give pre quizzes
before every lesson to get an idea of what the students know already and what I need to focus on.
I will put the high scoring students in one group, the average scoring students in one group, and
the lower scoring students in the other group. This will allow me to focus on the students that
need more help and will be in one group. In this lesson students data will be collected through
the post lesson quiz to determine how well they mastered the material and what I need to teach
more.

Procedures:
Students will enter the classroom and sit in their assigned group seating based off
the scores of their pre lesson quiz. After all students are seated and quiet I will pass out the
guided worksheet. I will then direct their attention to the smart board where I will have the
worksheet pulled up. I will walk them through both the lesson and the worksheet. Lastly I will go
over all rules and ask if any students have questions before getting started.
In this group I will present the students with three rocks (sedimentary,
metamorphic, and igneous). I will ask the students to describe each rock on their guided
worksheet using descriptive words. I will guide them by asking questions like “is the rock
rough?” , “is the rock light colored?’ , “does it have specs?” , etc. After describing each rock on
their worksheet I will provide them with crayons and draw a detailed picture of each rock so they
can refer to it later in the lesson. After drawing the pictures they will clean up the crayons and I
will move on to the next group.
In this section the students will work together in the groups I assigned. They will
go around and each explain how they described the rocks. All the students should remain quiet
and respectful when their group member is sharing. After all members of the group share they
will then discuss which rock is the igneous rock, metamorphic rock, and sedimentary rock. After
each group finishes I will circle around the class and check the groups work.
In this section, students will individually grab a tablet from the cart located at the
front of the class and bring it back to their seat. They will then log in to our class website and
find the post lesson quiz of the week. They will complete this quiz and submit it on the class
website. After they complete the quiz they will safely put the tablets back in the cart and return to
their seat.
After all tablets are returned and all the students are in their seats I will direct their
attention to the front. I will first ask students if they liked the lesson. I will then reveal to them
which rock was which. To finish off the lesson I will call three students up to the smart board to
play a quick game matching each rock to its specific name. Next class I will review any material
they struggled with based off the post lesson quiz.
Rationale:
This multimedia tool is a website many students and families are familiar with.
On the website you are able to embed quizzes and assignments. It is very easy to locate
and complete. As a student they are able to do this anywhere using a variety of
technology (ipad,Iphone, laptop, etc.) After they complete the quizzes and I can access the
scores immediately. I can provide my feedback very quickly allowing them to learn what
they got right and/or wrong. Google classroom is constantly updating their website and
changing things for the better to help online learning and communication. After this
COVID-19 pandemic I believe a lot of schooling will remain online and this is a great
tool to use.
This is an interactive lesson tool to engage the students. It provides them to get
out of their seat and increase confidence by standing in front of the class. They are able to
familiarize themselves with technology that they will continue to use in school. The game
is a fun matching game that allows them to apply what they have learned in the lesson to
match the rock to its name. When they get it right there is a clapping sound and when
they get it wrong there is a buzzer. This engages not only the student doing the activity
but also the whole class.
