Following your building analysis you have calculated that your beam-column joint requires a design
moment of M* = 250 kN.
You have performed a preliminary design which has yielded the following section sizes, post-tensioning
quantities and initial force and mild steel quantities.
Design Moment* M* 250kN
Column Height hc 0.82 m
Column Width wc 0.52 m
Beam Height hb 0.82 m
Beam Width wb 0.52 m
1. Use the detailed analysis procedure to calculate the moment capacity of the internal beam-
column joint at the design drift. Remember:
Account for geometric influences on moments and rotations
Account for elastic deformations
Check design assumptions (eg. β = 0.8, PT bars not yielding, Timber not yielding)
2. Modify the unbonded length of the external reinforcement to allow for 2.5 mm of connection
movement
3. Draw the beam-column back bone curve for:
Mpt – θimp
Ms – θimp (at yield θimp = 0.115% and c = 0.377, use lub,s = 260 mm)
Mcon - θimp
Mcon - θcon
Mcon – Drift
All submitted work should be neat and easy to follow. Marks will be deducted for untidy and
hard to follow work.
