Problem Set 6. Orifice

This document contains 5 problems related to orifice flow. Problem 1 involves calculating the distance a free jet will strike the floor based on head height (h) and container height (H). Problem 2 involves calculating discharge, coefficient of discharge, coefficient of contraction, and coefficient of velocity for an orifice. Problem 3 involves calculating discharge, jet diameter, and actual velocity for an orifice flow. Problem 4 involves calculating water surface elevations over time for a leaking water tank. Problem 5 involves calculating orifice discharge and time for water surfaces in two communicating vessels to equalize and become separated by 1m.

PLATE 6: Orifice

Name: ____________________________________
Section: _______________

1. Assuming the container shown is large and losses are negligible. Compute the
distance where the free jet leaving horizontally will strike the floor as a function of h
ℎ ℎ ℎ
and H when a) 𝐻 = 0.25, b) 𝐻 = 0.50, c) 𝐻 = 0.75.

2. A 75mm diameter orifice discharges 0.023 m3/s of liquid under a head of 2.90m.
The diameter of the jet at the vena contracta is found by calipering to be 65mm.
a. Calculate the coefficient of discharge.
b. Calculate the coefficient of contraction.
c. Compute the coefficient of velocity.

3. Oil discharges from a 250mm diameter pipe through a sharp crested round orifice,
100mm in diameter as shown. The coefficient of contraction and velocity are 0.63 and
0.98, respectively. Specific gravity of oil is 0.86.
a. Find the discharge from the orifice.
b. Find the diameter of the jet.
c. Find the actual velocity in the jet.

4. A raised water tank has a leak at the bottom which causes the water surfaces to
drop from elevation 4.88m to elevation 4.57m in a period of 12 hours.
a. What will be the elevation of the water surface in the tank after 5 full days
(starting from elevation 4.88m) if no water other than the leaking water is either
added or drained from the tank? The bottom of the tank is at elevation zero.
b. How long will it take to empty the tank due to leakage?
c. How long will it take to lower the water in the tank by 1.2m?

5. A prismatic vessel has two compartments A and B communicating by an orifice

0.3m square with C = 0.60. The horizontal cross – section of A is 10 sqm and that of
B is 0.40 sqm. At a certain time, the water in A is 6m above the center of the orifice
and in B is 3m.
a. Compute the discharge from A to B.
b. Find the time in which the water surfaces in the two tanks will reach the same
elevation.
c. How soon thereafter will the water surface be 1m apart?
