Lesson Plan: Teacher: School: Date: Grade: Level: Textbook: Unit: Main Topic: Lesson Type: Purpose: - Lesson Aims
Grade: V-th
Level: pre-intermediate
Main Topic: Present Tense Simple and Present Tense Continuous in contrast
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to review the language taught previously (daily activities)
and to consolidate the Present Tense Continuous.
Lesson Aims: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
-talk about present activities (actions taking place at the moment of speaking and daily activities);
Objectives:
a. Cognitive objectives:
- To encourage pupils to talk freely;
- To help students to talk about present activities;
- To give pupils more practice on pronunciation, vocabulary and the structures taught.
b. Affective objectives:
- To give students confidence in their ability to use the English language;
- To create a warm atmosphere;
- To end the lesson in a fun atmosphere.
Didactic strategies:
Anticipated problems: The situational context of the lesson (the presence of unknown people),
might inhibit them in the first part of the lesson. The teacher will encourage them to speak English
and to have fun miming.
Assumptions: The pupils are familiar with Present Tense (action verbs, sports and different
activities). The students have just learnt about Present Tense Continuous structure.
Timing: 50 minutes
Lesson procedure:
1. Warm-up:
Aims: -to generate interest and make students relax;
-to prepare students for the lesson;
Teacher initiates an informal conversation (oral questions): “Good morning”! “How are you
today?”
Students answer.
Interaction: T-SS, SS-T Skills: speaking. Time: 2 minutes
2. Checking homework:
Aim: -checking consolidation of the previously taught material;
Teacher checks if pupils have done their homework according to the task. She corrects,
gives or asks for more information whenever she feels it necessary.
Students read their homework and write to the blackboard. (2 crosswords with daily
activities and actions happening at the moment of speaking).
Interaction: T-SS, SS-T.
Skills : reading, writing, speaking. Time: 5 minutes
3. Elicitation stage:
Teacher initiates a conversation on the topic. She asks questions regarding the present
tense continuous and present tense simple, in order to complete the ‘Robo Present‘
worksheet. Teacher goes through the explanations with the class. Teacher elicits further
examples of present activities (uses, forms and the differences between present simple and
continuous). She may explain something in the students’ language.
Students listen to the teacher’s explanations and complete the ‘Robo present’.
Interaction: T-SS, SS-T. Skills: speaking, writing. Time: 5 minutes
Teacher tells the pupils they are going to mime a few actions in front of the classroom and
make sentences using Present Tense Continuous. Some students will mime a few actions, while the
others will have to guess the actions and make up sentences. (i.e. ‘What am I doing now?’). Teacher
makes error corrections if necessary.
5. Group-work
Aims: - to check the students’ ability to form sentences using Present Simple and Present
Continuous;
Students are divided into four groups. They are given some worksheets. Each group has
different tasks, containing a set of exercises in which pupils have to use the present tense simple
and continuous in contrast. Teacher sets a definite time limit and stops the students at the end of it,
whether they have finished or not. Teacher makes sure that students know what they are going to
do. During the activity the teacher moves around the classroom and watches the students, helping
them if necessary. Students solve the tasks and read aloud their answers. Teacher makes error
corrections, if necessary.
6. Singing a song
Students take a break and sing a song. (Am, are, is Verb Song) Time: 2 minutes
The pupils are asked to listen to the sounds in order to answer the questions. (i.e. ‘Is Mrs. Freeman
having a bath? ’No, she isn’t. She’s having a shower’). Students listen to the tape and answer the
questions. Teacher asks students to translate the sentences if she considers it necessary.
8. Listening-writing practice:
Students will listen ‘The Lemon Tree Song’ by Fool’s Garden in order to find specific information
(present continuous forms).
Teacher will briefly assess the results of the class activity and will assign written homework.
