As the great technological advancement has raised our standard living, it brought
changes in the world in many ways, and communication became an integral part of our
lives. In the absence of these factors, the world will contribute to various types of
inequality. War, inequality, discrimination, racism and injustice are some of the many
global problems that have arisen as a result of miscommunication. These global issues
are becoming more abundant because of the people who can't see what other people
have seen all over the world, a lot of miscommunication between people has been the
source of the confusion that creates war and problems between nations, which is why
our global culture doesn't perform as one. But today's age, globalization is growing
increasingly because of the people who support reform in our culture, much as Gordon
Brown wants to do not just for the benefit of the richest nations, but also for the
developing countries who need a hand to bring them up.
Brown claimed that the challenges of the world cannot be resolved by a single
country alone. He stated that, “You need in the long run for stability, for economic
growth, for jobs, as well as for financial stability, global economic institutions that make
sure that growth to be sustained has to be shared, and are built on the principle that the
prosperity of this world is indivisible.” The video talks about many different world
challenges that we face, and Gordon Brown provides examples of how children in other
countries are starving and how they are mistreated. Resemblance to these social
problems is both challenges to world stability and it is a struggle for humanity to build a
fundamentally better community, a society without the existence of injustices of any
kind. One of the examples that Gordon mentioned is that, back in the Philippines in
2001, millions of people were talking about the injustice of President Estrada's
government. Moreover, according to Babu (2018), communication will also continue to
be the most important field of problem solving, as seen by decision makers in the 21st
century. The role of communication in national growth would be somewhat different from
that of the 20th century, in that people would face a different set of problems, expect a
different set of responses from the media, including radio, TV, newspapers, magazines
and films, etc., then those of the twentieth century. Communication is very critical to the
development of the community in the involved groups of society. Communication is also
fundamental to any human action in the process of community growth. Okwor (2009)
argued that communication is really central, since the person concerned must endeavor
to share his or her experiences with the target group in order to justify the whole activity.
Without communication, no information can be given to relevant parties as a guide to
the effective promotion of community growth.
Technology has been a medium for normal communication, the Internet itself is a
vast network that can inspire and become a focal point for people. Gordon Brown also
argued that we need to go a step further. The Internet will become a central focus for
everyone in the world to take on global problems. Like global warming and world
hunger, we can do more than just bring down an oppressive dictator, technology and
the internet can be the end of world hunger and global warming, the power of
communication is strong. However, I believe that Gordon Brown is just addressing the
positives in communication, correct that the environment may be seriously impacted,
but that does not mean only in a good way, but also in a bad way. Terrorists and those
who want to damage others will use the Internet as a medium to distribute their bad
intentions. Censorship is also at issue; censorship limits the input and output of
material. Even though censorship is becoming harder and harder to enforce, it is still
implemented in countries like North Korea and China. Censorship is a hindrance to
Gordon Brown's vision of using the internet to address global issues.
