Dear Zindagi

Kaira struggles with intimacy and seeks therapy to understand her emotions. Her therapist, Dr. Khan, uses stories and examples to help Kaira process her feelings rather than interpreting for her. However, the therapist's behavior is sometimes unprofessional, like abruptly canceling a session. Through therapy, Kaira gains insight into defense mechanisms like regression, denial, displacement, and reaction formation that she uses to avoid difficult emotions. She makes progress in openly admitting her feelings to Dr. Khan before ending their sessions.

1. Kaira struggles with mixed emotions when it comes to intimate relationship.

She is in a space
where she does not allow herself to feel any emotion deeply, her passive-aggressive behavior,
avoidance, disassociating hurt/sadness were expressed. She relocates back to her parent’s home
in Goa in attempt to make sense of the meaning of life and relationship. She then suffered from
insomnia and family pressure. She also suffered from anxiety from all the things that she think
about.
2. The process of therapy is about enabling clients to find their own answers, by helping them in
touch with their own feelings and trusting their inner voice. The therapist somehow manifested
a professional behavior, but not totally for me. I was bothered when Kaira talked about her
childhood, her relationship with her parents, and the therapist Dr. Khan announces his
interpretation rather than helping her process her own emotions and jumps in too quickly to tell
her that she must try and look at her parents differently. And also the part of the ending, when
Dr. Khan cancelled their session at last minute without informing Kaira was unprofessional.
3. Orientation phase, was when Kaira went to Dr. Khan’s office. She discussed her problem by
telling her therapist that her best friend was the one who have a problem and that she wants
her to stop. But then she admitted that, that was her problem. Her therapist began the
identification phase by telling her a story about a guy who climbed the Mount Everest. In that
situation, Kaira was able to decide the easy way rather than the hard way. While the
exploitation phase was when Dr. Khan used his own stories, not to refocus the attention onto
himself but he used his own examples constructively for Kaira’s benefit. Just like when they
were at the beach, he revealed that he has a son and is divorced, it enabled Kaira to narrate
familial experiences that were difficult to her. And for the termination phase was when it was
their last therapy session and Kaira was making attempts to retain some interactions with Dr.
Khan. Even at the end of the movie, at Kaira’s short film screening, I did not see Dr. Khan’s
appearance.
4. When Dr. Khan was giving an example, a situational example of a guy who climbed the Mount
Everest without proper equipment and with his companions from a different race not even
knowing their language. He told that to Kaira, so Kaira would be able to decide if she wanted the
easy way or the hard way of deciding on her life. Second was when Dr. Khan encouraged Kaira
that it was okay to try new things until she finds what she is looking for. That was when Dr. Khan
told Kaira about buying a chair, but looking for the one that she wants to sit in. There’s a chair
that looks good but is uncomfortable to sit in, things like that. With that Kaira was able to
breathe that she was not acting like a slut but she was just doing the right thing in order to find
someone she truly loves. Third was when Dr. Khan was actively listening to Kaira’s story about
her past, or situation from her family. That was when Kaira burst into tears after telling Dr. Khan
her story and then Dr. Khan was showed to be actively listening to Kaira, which acknowledged
Kaira that someone was listening and someone understands her. Fourth was when Dr. Khan left
a note on his door to Kaira saying that he was at the beach. Dr. Khan said that there are rules
that you can break and there are rules that you cannot break. It showed that Dr. Khan offered
himself because his office might be stressful to Kaira and he wanted to have a new environment
for Kaira to open things up. Lastly, when Dr. Khan gave recognition to Kaira’s progress of being
direct with her feelings. That was when it was their last therapy session and Kaira admitted her
feelings to Dr. Khan. Dr. Khan told her that it was okay to admit her feelings rather than to keep
it inside. And that it was a great progress of her being direct with her feelings and letting them
all out.
5. Regression. When Kaira have a painful memories from her family. When kaira was 6 years old
she overheard her mother and grandfather having a conversation on how her mother does not
want kaira to live with them for financial reason. After that scenario Kaira decided to stop
writing them a letters and decided to hide her feelings about them for years. Denial. When kaira
knows that she like Raghuvendra. When they were at the club and raghuvendra asked kaira to
talk about getting serious with each other, kaira did not say anything at all and letting
Raghuvendra go. But when she learned that he was engaged she cried knowing that it hurts her
feelings. She’s in denial of admitting that she likes raghuvendra. Displacement. When kaira went
to jog with Jackie and Fatima, kaira suddenly bumped with a guy and her girlfriend. Kaira got
angry at them just because they were in love and looking into each other’s eyes. Recation
Formation. When kaira was at the club and raghuvendra asked her about something,
raghuvendra told her that her ex-girlfriend would be present to where he was going. Kaira was
hurt, she knows what she feels but she chose to behave the opposite manner saying that it was
okay.
