Practical-2 Simulation of Reactors

This document summarizes two problems involving chemical reactor simulations. The first problem involves simulating an ammonia synthesis reactor under various conditions. The second problem involves simulating reactors to convert ethanol to diethyl ether, including determining outlet temperatures, drawing a flow sheet, and calculating product flow rates for continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR), plug flow reactors (PFR), and a fixed conversion reactor.

Simulation of Reactors converting diethyl ether from ethanol

Problem statement-1

Ammonia synthesis reaction is represented by

The reaction stream consists of 1 mol N2, 3 mol H2 and 2 mol argon. The temperature and pressure
of the reaction are 675 K and 20 bar. The equilibrium constant for the reaction is 2 × 10-4.
Determine the percent conversion of nitrogen to ammonia in presence and absence of argon. Also
determine the conversion at 40 bar pressure.

Required input feed data;

Fluid package: PR EoS

Mass flowrate of input stream;
H2: 9 mol/sec
N2: 3 mol/sec

Result

Problem Statement-2

Simulation of reactors for a simple process in which ethanol is converted diethyl ether

• Feed Condition:
Temperature: 60C
Pressure: 1 atm
Mole fraction: ethanol 0.85
50 mol/sec flow
85% conversion (fixed conversion reactor)
• Determine the outlet temperature of the water for the following input conditions in the pump.
• Fluid package: SRK EOS
• Flow rate: 100 kg/hr
• Inlet Pressure: 3bar
• Inlet temperature: 120°C
• Outlet Pressure: 60bar
• Adiabatic Efficiency: 10%
What would be the adiabatic efficiency if the outlet temperature is 200°C?

• Create a flow sheet diagram for the production of ethyl acetate. Ethanol is combined with
acetic acid to produce ethyl acetate
C2H5OH + CH3COOH --------- C4H8O2 + H2O

• Feed Condition:
Temperature: 70°C
Pressure: 1 atm
Water: 8.892 kmol/hr
Ethanol 186.59 kmol/hr
Acetic Acid: 192.6 kmol/hr
Property package: SRK
• Kinetic Parameters:
Reaction is first order with respect to each reactant
Forward reaction: k = 18000, E = 59500 J/mol
Reaction occurs in Liquid phase
Composition basis is Molarity
• Reaction condition: Temperature: 335K and 1 atm

Determine the product flow rate assuming the reactor is a CSTR with the volume 0.14m3

Determine the product flow rate assuming the reactor is a PFR with the length = 2m and
