Assignment 3

A 600mm long, 100mm diameter centrifuge basket with a 25mm diameter discharge weir is rotating at 200Hz. The maximum volumetric flow of liquid that will retain all particles greater than 1μm diameter on the centrifuge wall is being calculated. The retarding force on particles in the liquid is given as 3πμdu, where u is the relative particle-liquid velocity, μ is liquid viscosity, and d is particle diameter. The densities of the liquid and solid particles and the liquid viscosity are provided to calculate the maximum liquid flow rate.

Assignment 3

A centrifuge basket 600 mm long and 100 mm internal diameter has a discharge weir
25 mm diameter. What is the maximum volumetric flow of liquid through the
centrifuge such that, when the basket is rotated at 200 Hz, all particles of diameter
greater than 1 μm are retained on the centrifuge wall? The retarding force on a
particle moving liquid may be taken as 3 π μ d u, where u is the particle velocity
relative to the liquid, μ is the liquid viscosity, and d is the particle diameter. The
density of the liquid is 1000 kg/m3, the density of the solid is 2000 kg/m3 and the
viscosity of the liquid is 1.0 mN s /m2. The inertia of the particle may be neglected.
