1.Use of preferred series
2. Standards and codes

A 45 mm diameter shaft is made of plain carbon steel with a yield strength of 400
Mpa. A parallel key of size 14 mm wide and 9 mm thick made of steel with yield
strength of 340 Mpa is to be used. Find the required length of key, if the shaft is
loaded to transmit the maximum permissible torque. Use maximum shear stress
theory and assume a fos is 2

A transmission shaft carries a pulley midway between the two bearings. The
bending moment at the pulley varies from 200 Nm to 600 Nm as the torsional
moment in the shaft varies from 70 Nm to 200 Nm. The frequencies of variation of
bending and torsional moments are equal to the shaft speed. The shaft is made of
steel (6ut = 540 N/mm2 and 6yt = 400 N/mm2). The corrected endurance limit of
the shaft is 200 N/mm2. Determine the diameter of the shaft using a factor of
safety of ‘2’.
It is required to design a cottar joint to connect two steel rods of same diameter.
Each rod is subjected to an axial tensile force of 50KN. The materials for rods and
cottar is plain carbon steel of Grade 30C8 ( Syt = 400 N/mm 2. The fos for rod and
cottar is 6 and 4 respectively. Assume yield strength in compression is twice the
yield strength in tension

Explain the basic procedure to find out the dimensions of bushed-pin type flexible
coupling. Write relevant equations and draw necessary sketches

A cantilever beam of circular cross section, made of alloy steel 30Ni4CrI (Sut=1500
N/mm2) is fixed at one end subjected to a completely reversed force of 1000 N at
the free end. The force is perpendicular to the axis of beam. The distance between
the fixed and free end of the cantilever beam is 400mm.The theoretical stress
concentration factor and notch sensitivity are 1.33 and 0.85 respectively. The
surface finish factor and size factor are 0.79 and 0.85 respectively. The
temperature and reliability factor are 0.975 and 0.868 respectively. The desired life
of the beam is 50000 cycles. If the required factor of safety is 1.5, determine the
diameter of the beam.
An offset link subjected to a force of 25 KN is shown in Fig. It is made of grey cast
iron FG300 and the factor of safety is 3. Determine the dimensions of the cross-
section of the link

A gearbox shaft supporting two spur gears A and B and mounted between two
bearings C1 and C2 is shown in figure2. The pitch circle diameters of gears A and B
are 500 mm and 250 mm respectively. The shaft is made of alloy steel (S ut = 620
N/mm2 and Syt = 480 N/mm2). The factors Kb and Kt of the ASME code are 2 and 1.5
respectively. The gears are keyed to the shaft. Determine the shaft diameter using
ASME code

Explain modified Goodman diagram for fluctuating axial/bending stresses and

torsional stresses.

load of 12 kN. The nut is made of phosphor bronze having 0.12 as coefficient of
friction and 6 MPa as allowable bearing pressure. The effective collar diameter is
46 mm and coefficient of collar friction is 0.15. The load is raised and lowered by
means of handle of length 300 mm. Determine

iii) The yield strength of the screw material, if fos is 4;
iv) The overall efficiency; and
v) The height of nut.
