Lesson Plan

This lesson plan introduces trigonometry to 11th grade students over two class periods. Students will learn to identify sides of right triangles and calculate trigonometric ratios. They will find missing angles and sides, and apply concepts to real-world problems involving elevation and depression angles. Formative assessments include worksheets with varying difficulty levels and a class activity measuring shadow lengths to calculate the sun's elevation angle.

LESSON PLAN: Trigonometry, GRADE 11

Date: April 25, 2021

Teacher(s) Name: Mrs. Nihal El Gohary
Grade: 11
Lesson: Trigonometry Intro
Content Area: Mathematics – Trigonometry

Description/Abstract of Lesson: Students will identify the hypotenuse, adjacent side, and
opposite side of an acute angle in a right triangle. They will find missing measures (angles/sides) in
right angled triangles as well as apply what they learned solving real life application problems on
angles of elevation and angles of depression.

Timeline of Lesson: Two 55-minute periods. Additional time will be needed if you
have students don’t understand any of the concepts.

Common Core Standards

Process Strand: Representation:

Students will use the six trigonometric ratios for a given angle in a right triangle to find the exact
trigonometric function values for angles that measure 30°, 45°, and 60° and they will Solve applied
problems using right triangle trigonometry.

Content Strand: Algebra

Students will use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing lengths of the sides of a right
triangle.

Lesson Objectives: Upon successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Identify the hypotenuse, adjacent side, and opposite side of an acute angle in a right triangle.
 Determine the six trigonometric ratios for a given angle in a right triangle.
 Use a calculator to find the value of the six trigonometric functions for any acute angle.
 Use a calculator to find the measure of an angle given the value of a trigonometric function.
 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing lengths of the sides of a right triangle.
 Find the missing lengths and angles of a right triangle.
 Find the exact trigonometric function values for angles that measure 30°, 45°, and 60°.
 Solve applied problems using right triangle trigonometry.
Introduction:

Begin instruction with an opening exercise; where the students are asked to complete
study the following tables and identify the important vocabulary and trig terms.
The tables are presented on the Smart Board and the document is sent to them where
they will work on it via their iPads.

Students are asked to work in pairs to complete the previous tables. Then the class is
brought back together to discuss their answers. Ask a volunteer pair to come and
represent their answers to the class. After they finish, an open discussion is set so that
the whole class reaches the correct conclusions.

Then, the students are given an exercise where they will immediately apply the rules
that they concluded as follows;
Give the students about 10 minutes to solve these examples individually, then ask
them to take turns to come to the board and explain to the class how each example is
solved and how they applied the previous ratios to get to the answers.

Then, finalize the given ratios and how they are applied as follows:
In any right angled triangles:
1. The sine of an angle is the opposite side divided by the hypotenuse.
2. The cosine of an angle is the adjacent side divided by the hypotenuse.
3. The tangent of an angle is the opposite side divided by the adjacent side.
We use these ratios to find the missing dimensions inside the triangle.

Lesson Preparation:

a) Students will carry out one of the two activities explained below.
b) Assign students to work in 2 groups.

For each group: Assign a Leader and a Recorder. The leader will distribute the tasks
among the students and the recorder will fill in the sheet and record the results of the
team.

The Activity:

Finding the angle of elevation of the SUN

This is an outside class activity. We are going to find the angle of elevation of the Sun.
Students will be divided in 2 groups:

1A: Students measure one student’s height and the length of his/her shadow. Then they fill
in the Student Activity Sheet 1A.

Materials:

Measuring tape, Construction paper, markers and iPads.

1B: Students measure the length of the shadow of some tall object, eg: flagpole and fill in
Student Activity Sheet 1B.

Walk around and observe the students as they take their measurements and check that they
are carrying out the steps correctly.

Areas Where Students May Struggle

Some students have trouble measuring the height of the student/object.

Some students have trouble applying the rules.

On the Smart Board, open the 2 groups’ results and check the values of the angle of elevation of the
sun. The results have to be near. Discuss the results with the students and open a class discussion to
conclude the following:
Then, have the students solve in pairs these following exercises to apply what they have learned:
Now, open a class discussion, ask 2 volunteer students to step to the board and explain to the class
how they applied the rules to solve these 2 questions.

At the end, finalize the rules with the students and sum them up as follows:

Conclusion: The angle of elevation and angle of depression are alternate interior angles; hence, they
are congruent. i.e. they are equal in measure.
Closure:

Have the students study these charts, fill them, make some observations about the ratios and develop
a strategy to memorize these important trig angles and fill the table below:
Differentiation:

Adaptation 1: Some students will easily complete the table while others will struggle or
be slow to start their work. Students can work together in pairs or groups to help each
other fill the table and come up with a memorization strategy/technique.

Adaptation 2: Open the YouTube song to help the class memorize the rules. Here is the link
to that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIWJo5uK

Formative Assessment:
Note:

Using a worksheet comprised of tasks which get progressively harder. The more advanced students
will quickly progress to the later questions whilst the less able can concentrate on grasping the
essentials.
