1. What happened to the exposed end of the spoon after five minutes?
Because of the rapidly moving molecules in the boiling water, the
molecules bump in the metal spoon. The reason why the hot spoon burns
your hand is because the heat is transferred to your skin cause by
conduction.
2. What did you notice about the outside surface of the mug when you touched it? Why?
3. Suggest ways to reduce the effect of the heat on the burner so that we can avoid getting hurt
when we lift it out of the pan.
Use personal protective equipment, including forearm protection. You
may use a potholder or any cloth as an alternative in lifting out.
