ENGLISH GRAMMAR RULES AND EXERCISES
COURSE: FOUR
PREPARADO POR: PROF .AUGUSTO DE LA FUENTE

INTRODUCTION
To the student:

You undoubtedly have studied the framework of English in previous years,

but maybe you have forgotten how to use some of the basic tools of grammar as skillfully as
you would like.

These exercises concentrate on the parts of speech and the rules of grammar, tools
needed to construct a sentence, the basic unit of communication.

The purpose of this course is to help you increase your understanding of, and your
skill in applying principles of language usage for oral and written communication.

It is my desire that the different exercises in this book help you improve your knowledge
of the English language.

Follow the instructions of your teacher, whom I am sure, will guide you to throughout
this school year in improving your understanding and communication skills of the
language being learned,

Cooperative learning.

Cooperating with others can help you learn and remember language better.

When you cooperate in a group, you explain the material to be learned to others and then listen
to their explanations. This will help understand better the exercise being done.

The assignments that best work as group activities are those that require different skills,
thinking and imagination which help you benefit from different points of view.

Goals and objectives

The objective of this course is to help you increase your knowledge of the English language
which I am sure will help you in increasing your communication skills. But to achieve this,
you must set goals and objectives for yourself as you work through the exercises.
Discuss them with a partner. Are your goals and objectives useful? Are they achievable?
Make revisions if necessary.

Best of luck throughout this school year and always keep in mind that:
“There’s nothing better than a good education.”

Augusto De La Fuente
English Instructor.

STRUCTURE FUTURE TENSE USING “GOING TO”.

(Tiempo futuro usando la expresión “GOING TO”.)

Para formar el futuro usando la expresión GOING TO se usa una forma del verbo
BE ( am are is ) como verbo auxiliar mas GOING TO más la forma sencilla del verbo
principal.

SUBJECT AUXILIARY VERB GOING TO PRINCIPAL VERB COMPLEMENT

Ella lavara Su ropa

They are going to study English this year

Ellos estudiaran Ingles este año

The Little cat is going to sleep on the coach

Para formar la oración negativa se agrega la palabra NOT después del verbo auxiliar.

COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES / ADVERBS

Los adjetivos tienen tres grados de comparación.
El grado positivo, comparativo, y superlativo.

El grado positivo es la forma del adjetivo que no se ésta comparando.

Mary is a pretty little girl.

These are difficult questions to answer

El grado comparativo se usa cuando dos personas, animales, o cosas se están comparando,
una con la otra.

Para formar el grado comparativo del adjetivo o adverbio de una o dos silabas, generalmente
se agrega ER al grado positivo y luego se usa la palabra THAN. La palabra THAN introduce
la segunda persona, animal, o cosa que se está comparando.

Mary is taller than Alice. John is older than Carlos.

Pero si el adjetivo tiene más de dos silabas, ya no se agrega ER, sino que se usa la palabra
MORE antes del grado positivo.

65
Alicia is more intelligent than Carlos
The English book is more expensive than the science book

Cuando se comparan personas, animales o cosas que son iguales se usa

AS + el grado positivo + AS+ el grado positive del adjetivo

Mary is as tall as Alicia This house is as expensive as that house

El grado superlativo se usa para comparar más de dos personas, animales o cosas. Se
compara uno con más de uno.

Para formar el grado superlativo de adjetivos / adverbios de una o dos silabas se usa el
articulo definido THE y se agrega EST al grado positivo.

This is the biggest class in school John is the tallest boy in this class

Pero si el adjetivo/adverbio tiene más de dos silabas, no se agrega EST sino que se usa
siempre el articulo definido THE + la palabra MOST + el grado positivo.

Mary is the most intelligent girl of the class.

The manager is the most important person in the office.
