Informational Listening

After going through this module, you are expected to:

a. Identify the informational listening skills;
b. Construct an informative text;
c. Comprehend a story through listening.

PRE-ACTIVITY:

Write down the information that you can get based from the given text.

COVID-19 is a life-threatening infectious disease, especially in

immunocompromised individuals. The main symptoms of this respiratory disease are
fever, cough and fatigue. The primary source of these infections is not yet known,
but the disease can be transmitted through droplets and close contact. After
several months of the spread of this dangerous virus, there are still no specific
drugs and definitive treatments for the virus. Definitive and timely diagnosis of
this disease and isolating patients can be helpful in treating patients and
preventing the spread of the disease. The onset and progression of COVID-19
depend on the interaction between the virus and the immune system. Therefore,
the best way to control this disease is disruption of the transmission route, using
decoction and vitamins to strengthen the immune system and using drugs to control
the progression of the disease. Following recommendations of WHO should be a
priority for everyone.

Discussion

Listening

Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in

the communication process. Hearing refers to the sounds that enter your
ears. It is a physical phenomenon that occurs spontaneously if you do not
have any hearing issues. Listening, on the other hand, necessitates more than
that: it necessitates attention and concerted effort, both mental and
physical. Listening entails paying attention not only to the story itself, but
also to how it is conveyed, including the use of language and speech, as well
as the other person's body language. To put it another way, it means being
mindful of both verbal and nonverbal cues. The degree to which you
interpret and comprehend these signals determines your ability to listen
effectively. Listening is a mechanism that requires active participation. In
reality, the listener can and should be just as involved as the speaker in the
process. This method of becoming actively engaged is referred to as
"successful listening."
Good communication entails the ability to listen. Messages are easily
misunderstood if you don't know how to listen well. As a result, contact
breaks down, and the message sender can become upset or annoyed as a
result.

The purpose of listening:

1. To specifically focus on the messages being communicated, avoiding
distractions and preconceptions.
2. To gain a full and accurate understanding into the speaker’s point
of view and ideas.
3. To critically assess what is being said
4. To show interest, concern and concentration.

5. To encourage the speaker to communicate fully, openly and

honestly.
6. To arrive at a shared and agreed understanding and acceptance of
both sides’ views.

Barriers to Effective Listening

One common issue is that instead of paying attention to what someone

is saying, we become distracted after a sentence or two and begin to think
about what we would say in response or other random thoughts. This means
we aren't paying attention to the rest of the speaker's post. The difference
between average speech rate and average processing rate is partly to blame
for this problem. We can process between 400 and 800 words per minute on
average, while average speech rates are between 125 and 175 words per
minute. Listeners also use their free time when listening to daydream or
think about other topics rather than paying attention to what the speaker is
saying. Of course, how well we listen is influenced by the clarity of what the
speaker is saying. We find it easier to concentrate when the speaker is
fluent, has a familiar voice, and speaks at a volume that is suitable for the
situation. Focusing on someone who speaks quickly and softly, for example, is
more difficult, particularly if they are conveying complicated details. We
may also be distracted by the speaker's personal presence or by something
else that seems more important. Generally, we find it much more difficult to
regulate our body language, and you are more likely to express your
disinterest and/or distraction by lack of eye contact or posture. When the
speaker notices the issue, he or she will most likely stop speaking. They
could be insulted or angry in the worst-case scenario.

What is Informational Listening?

Informational listening is listening with the goal of learning,

understanding, and grasping information. Informational listening is
distinguished from several other forms of listening, such as relational,

appreciative, critical, discriminative, and inspirational listening.

Informational listening is considered a passive form of listening because the
listener is not judging, critiquing, or evaluating the message. They're just
listening to understand it.

On a daily basis, most of us engage in informational listening. If we

get lost, we may need to wait for directions and pay close attention to the
gas station attendant. If we start a new job, we must pay attention to the
details provided by our employer in order to understand our new duties and
tasks. If a mother dials 911 because her toddler son is choking, she must
carefully listen to the details and guidance given in order to administer first
aid or CPR to the boy.

Informational Listening Skills

Informational listening helps us learn, become smarter, and become

better at what we do in life. Therefore, it's clear that polishing skills that
improve our informational listening abilities is advantageous to our lives.

Let's take a look at a few skills that help with informational listening.

1. Knowledge of Vocabulary
The more words we know, the more we can understand. Therefore,
increasing mastery of vocabulary through techniques like learning a new word
a day or reading books can assist in being a good informational listener.
2. Concentration
We must know that in order to concentrate, we need to be motivated
to focus, stay disciplined in the face of distractions, actively and mentally
say ''no'' to distractions, and accept responsibility in getting the task at
hand accomplished. Informational listening requires immense concentration.
3. Memory
With good memory, we can recall experiences and information from
our lives to help make sense of information in informational listening.

4. Refraining from Judgment

This skill requires an open mind. If we begin judging and jumping to
conclusions when attempting to properly listen and retain information, our
mind will wander and possibly miss valuable pieces of information.
5. Organization
This does not mean being able to properly divide papers into an
organized filing system. This means identifying key concepts from auditory
information and mentally organizing them into an outline so that you can
better understand and remember material.

Activity

Identify what type of listening information skill is being asked.

__________ 1. Identifying concepts from auditory information and mentally

organizing them into an outline to better understand and remember.
__________ 2. Recall experiences and information from our lives.
__________ 3. Focusing on the speaker and to what the speaker is saying.
__________ 4. This skill requires an open mind.
__________ 5. This skill is acquired if a listener has a huge vocabulary.

Assessment

A voice message will be sent to you via messenger. Listen to it carefully and
write the moral lesson of the story.
