CHAPTER III

Research Design

A research design is a tool to gather information to produce a research paper.


The method used by the researchers in this study is descriptive research. Descriptive
requires questionnaires and interviews to gather data from the selected respondents.
Questionnaires will be used to determine who can be the possible respondents to be
interviewed since they experience problems about proper waste management. This
research design was chosen by the researchers to determine how improper waste
disposal affect them. For the purpose of this study, descriptive research is used to
derive solution to the problem.

Research Instrument Used/ Data Gathering Instrument

Data gathering instrument refer to devices used to collect data such as


questionnaires, test, instruments interview, schedule s and checklists (Seaman
1991:42). The researchers designed a survey questionnaires and interview to gather
information from their respondents which are the residents of Zones 2 and 3 of
Barangay Pinagkawitan. According to Polit and Hungler (1997:466), a questionnaire is
"a method of gathering information from respondents about attitude, knowledge, beliefs,
and feelings. The researchers chose these instruments to used in this study to gather
their respondents thoughts and responses about the solid waste management for them
to save more time and it is also expensive and respondents can answer this knowing
that their answers will be given an action by the researchers.

Respondents of the Study

Respondents are person who have part in the study and who answer the
researchers' questions. Respondents of this study should know and have concern on
solid waste management of their barangay.
The respondents of the study are people from Zones 2 and 3 of Barangay
Pinagkawitan, Lipa City. Respondents should have been resident of the said barangay
for the past 3 years. The researchers chose the said respondent for the reason that they
are ones and know and experience the problems that garbage brought in their
barangay. To determine the causes and possible solution to the solid waste of their
barangay, researchers conducted interview as their sampling technique or the methods
of collecting data.

Data Collection Procedures

The researchers used questionnaires to know the personal background of a


possible respondent in Barangay Pinagkawitan, Lipa City. The questionnaires were
made to know if someone is fitted to be part of the study's population. The researchers
also used interview for the qualified respondent to lessen the time and money spent for
the study. All data were recorded by researchers and were used to know the results of
the whole study.

Date Analysis Plan

After gathering all the data, a systematic organization, analysis and interpretation
would be alone to obtain concrete answers and conclusions. The following
technique/procedure is used :

Percentage and percentage frequency distribution

This was utilized to identify the relative distribution of respondent's age, gender,
and even as part a whole.

The formula used was :
