CHAPTER 3: DISTILLATION

PART 2

Question 1

A single-stage (or a simple) batch still pot is used to separate methanol from water. The feed with the total
amount of 50 moles of an 80 mol% methanol is charged into the still pot operated at 1 atm. The desired
amount of distillate is 31.06 moles. Determine:
a) The composition of liquid remained in the pot after the distillation has ended.
b) The composition of the distillate.

Use Appendix 1 to answer this question.

Appendix 1
Question 2

50 mol of an ethanol water mixture containing 17 mol% ethanol was subjected to a differential distillation
at atmospheric pressure. The distillation was carried out until the liquid residue contained 8 mol% ethanol.
Determine:
a) the amount of the residue and distillate.
b) the composition of distillate.

Use Appendix 2 to answer this question.

Appendix 2

Question 3

Consider a binary liquid mixture which composed of two components; A and B. These components are to
be separated by a flash distillation process as shown below. Derive the operating line equation for the flash
distillation process when the system has attained its equilibrium.
