What is Learning Analytics?
➢ Learning for students is a product of interactions between peers, educators, tutors, parents, and online
games and instructions (Elias 1). Therefore educators spend a great amount of time trying to design their
learning to maximize these interactions for the purpose of learning.
➢ learning analytics is an emerging technology that enable the statistical evaluation of data and patterns
within the data to be used to enhance learning experiences and environments.
➢ The purpose of learning analytics is to capture student data fast to build systems that the content and
levels of support are designed enhance student learning.
➢ It predicts behaviour, act on predictions, and then feed those results back into the process in order to
improve the predictions over time (Elias 5).
Predictive Learning
Analytics (PLA) 1
PLA has been used with advanced
computation predictive modeling to identify
which students are going to pass a course
and which are at risk. With software
emerging like this, teachers can begin to
target instruction to help those at high risk
while providing support to other groups of
students to maximize their potential.

understanding and interpreting patterns of
exchanges between students. For example,
in online learning student data can be
gathered about the types of
communication using chat logs, discussion
posts, and comments.
Learning Analytics Benefits
1. Identify target concerns - Teachers are provided with insight to students learning quickly so
that timely feedback and support can be given. Also, teachers can identify students at risk so
that intervention can be provided.
2. Curriculum enhancement - Through the analysis of data, educators can determine the
weaknesses in student learning and determine what improvements can be made. Educators
can strategically plan to ensure that the learning curriculum directly targets students needs to
maximize learning potential.
3. Student learning outcomes - Data mining can provide an analysis of how student learning
experience through learner interactions with technology can revil student persistence, learning
behavior, and ability to adapt all to predict learning outcomes.
Learning Analytics Challenges
1. Ethical and privacy issues - Problems such as consent, data accuracy, how to respect
privacy, sharing data, and data gathering pose issues to students privacy online.

With the application of learning analytics, a dashboard can be created to organize the
received information in order to provide feedback.
