HERBAL MEDICINES

Asthma – is a disease of the bronchial tubes or airways. Symptoms are a feeling of tightness in
the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.

Herbal Medications:

1. Talumpunay leaves
 Roll 2 dried leaves
 Use as a cigarette every 6 hours.

2. Kalatsutsi leaves
 Roll 2 dried leaves
 Use as cigarette, one in the morning and one in the evening.
3. Sampalok bark
 Chop and boil a one-foot long piece of bark in 3 glasses of water for 10 minutes.
 Dosage:
Adults: 1 cup every after meal and at bedtime.
Children: ½ cup, 4 times a day (after meals and at bedtime).
Babies: 2tsps., 4 times a day (after meals and at bedtime).
4. Kulitis leaves and flowers
 Boil 5 chopped young stems with flowers and leaves in 5 glasses of water for 10
minutes.
 Dosage:
Adults: 1 cup, 4 times a day
Children: ½ cup, 4 times a day
Babies: 2 tsps., 4 times a day
Note: This treatment is specially good for excessive mucus discharge.

Bleeding wound – a cut or break in the skin and flesh resulting from injury.
Herbal Medications:
1. Young saging leaves
 Pound young leaves until soft and juicy
-drop the juice over the wound. Apply with pressure the pounded leaves over
the wound. Bandage snugly but not too tight. If bleeding does not stop after 15
minutes, bring the patient to the nearest hospital or clinic for proper treatment.
2. Mayana leaves
 Wash the young leaves. Crush and extract the juice from the leaves.
-drop a few drops of the juice directly on the wound. Apply the crushed leaves as
poultice. Bandage snugly but not too tightly to interfere with circulation.

Cough
Herbal Medications:
1. Lagundi leaves
 Boil 4 tablespoons of chopped dried leaves or 6 tablespoons of chopped fresh
leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes
 Dosage:
Adults: ½ cup, 3 times a day
Children: (babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
(2-6 yrs.) 2 tablespoons, 3 times a day
(7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day
2. Oregano leaves
 Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
 Dosage:
Adults: ½ cup, 3 times a day
Children: (babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
(2-6 yrs.) 2 tablespoons, 3 times a day
(7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day
3. Mansanilya leaves and flowers
 Boil 1 cup of chopped dried leaves and flowers or 1 ½ cups of fresh leaves and
flowers in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
 Dosage:
Adults: ½ cup, every 4 hours
Children: (babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
(2-6 yrs.) 2 tablespoons, 3 times a day
(7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day
4. Kantutay
 Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves and flowers in 2 glasses of water for 15
minutes.
 Dosage:
Adults: ½ cup, every 4 hours
Children: (babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
(2-6 yrs.) 2 tablespoons, 3 times a day
(7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day
5. Alagaw leaves
 Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes. Drain and
squeeze in 2 calamansi. Put 1 tablespoon sugar.
 Dosage:
Adults: ½ cup, every 4 hours
Children: (babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day .
(2-6 yrs.) 2 tablespoons, 3 times a day.
(7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day.

Rheumatism or Rheumatic Joint Pain – a form of arthritis affecting the large joints of the
extremities.
Herbal Medications:
1. Kilaw poultice
 Chop or crush a rhizome and mix with oil
 Apply on the joint as poultice overnight
2. Mangga bark or hot compress
 Boil a piece of chopped bark
 Use the decoction for hot compress
3. Lumbang Bato leaves compress
 Heat the leaves
 Apply on the joints directly while still hot for 15 minutes, 2 times a day.
4. Malabulak leaves and young stalks compress
 Chop leaves and young stalks and put in a cloth bag. Add ½ tsp. of salt.
 Warm the bag and apply as compress
5. Herba Buena
 Boil 4 tablespoons of dried leaves in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes.
 Dosage:
Adults: ½ glasses, every 4 hours.
Fever- occurs when there is an elevation of the body temperature
Herbal Medications:

1. Vinegar
 Put 2 tbsps of inegar in a basin of cold water
 Use this for making vinegar compress on the forehead if ice is not available
2. Balimbing leaves
 Boil 2 cups of chopped leaves in ½ gallon of water for 10 mins. Strain. Cool for 2
hrs.
 Use this in making cold compress if ice is not available
3. Kamias leaves
 Boil 3 cups of chopped fresh leaves in one gallon of water for 15 minutes. Strain.
 Use this decoction for cold or hot sponge bath

Internal medications

1. Tagulinaw plant
 Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves with the whole plant in 2 glasses of water for
15 minutes
 Dosage: Adults:1 cup, ever 4 hrs
Children: (Babies) 1 tbp every 4 hrs
(2-6 yrs) ¼ cup every 4 hrs
(7-12yrs) ½ cup every 4 hrs
2. Okra seeds
 Roast dried seeds and grind or pound fine. Boil ½ cup of the ground seeds in 2
glasses of water for 15 mins. Cool and strain.
 Dosage: Adults:1 cup, thrice a day, after meals
Children: (Babies) 1 tbp thrice a day, after meals
(2-6 yrs) ¼ cup thrice a day, after meals
(7-12yrs) ½ cup thrice a day, after meals
3. Lagundi leaves
 Boil 4 tbsps of chopped dried leaves or 6 tablespoons of fresh chopped leaves in
2 glasses of water for 15 mins.
 Dosage: Adults:1 cup, every 4 hours
Children: (Babies) 1 tbsp every 4 hours
(7-12yrs) ½ cup every 4 hours
Sore throat- a sore throat is a congestion or inflammation in the throat due to tonsillitis,
pharyngitis or laryngitis.

Herbal Medications:

1. Luya/ginger lozenges
 Wash and peel a small piece of ginger
 Chew slowly for a few minutes. Swallow the juice. Or, keep a small piece in the
mouth, chewing it little by little.
2. Sabila leaves
 Wash the leaf and cut in ½ leaf sizes
 Keep in the mouth all day, swallowing the juice. Take another piece when there
is no more juice.
3. Bawang lozenges
 Wash one piece and peel
 Keep in the mouth for some time, chewing it slow. Swallow juice.

Toothache-any pain in or about a tooth


1. Abukado seed
 Slice a small piece that will fit into the tooth cavity
 Place as filling inside the cavity. Renew fillings 2 times a day
2. Bawang fillings
 Slice a small piece, enough to fit the tooth cavity
 Place inside the cavity as filling. Renew the filling 2 times a day.
3. Kataka-taka leaves
 Crush young kata-kata leaves
 Apply directly on swollen face
4. Herba Buena
 Pound fresh leaves and extract the juice. Moisten a small piece of clean cotton
with the juice
 Place moist cotton inside the cavity as filling
 NOTE: these medications are only temporary relief of toothache due to cavities.
