Bending Stress in Beams Report

1) The student conducted an experiment measuring the bending moment, stress, and strain in a beam. Graphs show the relationships between bending moment and the measured/theoretical stress and strain. 2) As bending moment increases, stress and strain at different gauge positions along the beam also increase, reaching a maximum then decreasing as bending moment decreases. Stress and strain have a direct relationship with bending moment. 3) Positive values indicate tension while negative values indicate compression in the beam. Theoretical formulas accurately predict stresses and strains, though experiments have minor errors from material defects and gauge limitations.

Bending Moment (Nm)
Relationship between bending moment and stress/strains at various
gauges positions.
As the bending moment increases the strains at different gauges also increases
and the bending moment reaches at the maximum point and then the value of
bending moment decreases then the values od strains and stresses also decrease
accordingly.
So, the relationship between bending moment and stress/strains is direct
relationship.

Why some strains and stress values are positive while others are
negative?
The positive values of stress and strains shows the beam is in tension at the
position of strain gauge and where the values are negative the beam is in
compression state.

At fixed value of bending moment, gauge 4 and 5 shows same values

why?
The gauge no. 4 and 5 shows the same values of strains because they are placed
at the same vertical position of 23mm, so they show same values of strains.

Why compressive strains by gauge 1 is larger than the tensile strains of

gauge 8 and 9 at fixed bending moment?
Gauge 1 is attached at the inner most fiber of the beam so it is experiencing the
largest compressive strain and stresses while the gauges 8 and 9 are below the
external fibers which shows less tensile strains and stresses than the compressive
ones.
Do the theoretical formulae accurately predict the stresses and strains in
the beam?
Yes, the theoretical formulas accurately predict the stresses and strains in the
beam while there are errors in the experimental setup of strains gauges.
In theoretical stresses the material behaves uniformly so there are no deviations
while in real life there are defects in the material and strains gauges do not
accurately measure the stress and strain in beam.
In the center of beam the theoretical formula will tell there are no strain and
stress but in reality there will be some minor stresses and strains which the
gauges can read.
