SKILL 49: RECOGNIZE –LY
ADJECTIVES
Generally when a word ends in –ly in English, it is an adverb. However, there are a few words
ending in –ly that are adjectives, and these –ly adjectives can cause confusion in written
expression questions on the TOEFL test.
Umumnya ketika sebuah kata diakhiri dengan –ly dalam bahasa Inggris, itu adalah kata
keterangan. Namun, ada beberapa kata yang diakhiri dengan –ly yang merupakan kata sifat, dan
kata sifat –ly ini dapat menyebabkan kebingungan dalam pertanyaan ekspresi tertulis pada tes
TOEFL. Jadi kita harus bias membedakan kata adj dan adv
Adj selalu diikuti noun
The manager turned in This example is correct, but appears to be incorrect;
his weekly(adj) report(noun). Benar it appears that there is an –ly adverb in front of the

Adjectives hanya menjelaskan noun atau pronoun jadi untuk adj hanya boleh terletak di
depan noun/pronoun tetapi adv itu tdk boleh terletak di depan noun karena adv
menjelaskan verb, adjective, serta adverb.

seasonally tadi di ubah menjadi seasonal supaya menjadi adj agar dapat menjelaskan
fashion yang merupakan noun

Incorrect karena pada kalimat di atas kata lately masih merupakan adv untuk menjelaskan
movie yang merupakan noun jadi kalimat disini masih salah
Kalimat yang benar yaitu Do you want to go to the early movie or the late movie. Jadi
lately harus di ubah menjadi late agar menjadi adj shg dapat menjelaskan movie yang
merupakan noun
4. The quarterly reports need to be turned in at the next weekly meeting.
Kalimat diatas correct posisi penempatan kata pada kalimat sudah benar semua kata
quarterly merupakan adj berada di posisi yang tepat menjelaskan report yang
merupakan noun. Dan kata Weekly merupakan adj menjelaskan meeting merupakan
noun disini juga sudah benar
5. He did not have a manly reaction to he negatively comments.
Incorrect karena pada kalimat kata negatively masih merupakan adv jadi kalimat disini
masih salah seharusnya untuk mrnjelaskan adv harus kata adj kemudian baru diikuti kata
noun
Correct answer He did not have a manly reaction to he negative comments. Jadi
negatively tadi di ubah menjadi negative supaya menjadi adj agar dapat menjelaskan
comments yang merupakan noun
