Starting Clue Welcome to the amazing Shlo-chem-mo-amazing-race.

To begin your journey, you

must recall the 4 atomic theories-cities of Science 10.
Create a mnemonic or story line to remember the 4 atomic theories and the theorist behind
each.

Once you have figured a way to memorize the theorists and their models go to Raisin Bun Town
to get your next clue.

Envelope 1: You have received clue #1 – You must unlock the Raisin Bun locks to get into Raisin
Bun Town. To do so you must correctly identify the combo for the following 2 isotopes and
answer the question below.

Lock Combo Element Name Number of Number Number of Mass

Protons Neutrons Electrons number
1 Chromium - 54 24 30 24 54
2 Lanthanum-140 57 83 57 140

Raisin Bun Lock combination #1 ___24___, ___30___, __24____, __54____

Raisin Bun Lock Combination #2 __57____, __83____, ___57___, __140____

Time saver (save 10 minutes by answering the following question). How is mass number
different than atomic mass?
Envelope 2
Congratulations you have received clue number #2. Great to see you have made it through
Raisin Bun Town! For your next mission you must head out to the island of Bohr Bora.

Pit Stop (Airport) – To get onto the plane you must find the passenger with your next clue.
Identify his name, row number, and seat.

His Row Number = (Beryllium’s total # of electrons) + (Nitrogen’s total # of valence electrons).
His seat # = The subscripts of the compound beryllium nitride.

______________________
Subscript #1 Subscript #2
His name = A combination of the chemical symbol’s beryllium and nitrogen.

Row number = 4 + 5 = 9
His Seat # = 32
His Name: Ben

Time Saver (save 10 minutes by answering the following question) – Draw the Bohr diagram of
beryllium and the Lewis dot diagram of nitrogen.

Envelope 3 Bohr Bora – Welcome to Bohr Bora, you must identify the taxi number you must
take to the town Centre.

Taxi number = number of electron for lithium -6, number of protons for lithium-7, number of
neutron for lithium-8, mass number of lithium-7, mass number of lithium 8

=33578
Envelope 4

Town Centre – you are off to town Centre to find the most important person on the exotic
island of Bohr Bora
Identify the following mystery elements to form a secret code.

Mystery element 1 – Group 14, period 2 _______C______

Mystery element 2 – Noble gas, period 1 ______He_______
Mystery element 3 – Halogen, period 2 _______F________
Space
Mystery element 1 – Alkali Earth Metal, period 6 ____Ba________
Mystery element 2 – Noble gas, period 2 ___Ne________

Go up to Shlomo and make your best voice of the character in the secret code.

Envelope 5 – Cool, cool you got your next clue. With your new crew you are off to the planetary
system Rutherford.
To get your next clue identify the following molecules as acidic (a), molecular (m), or ionic (I).
Then complete the question below. The secret code will show up.

A) Aluminum oxide __________I_________

B) H2PO4 ____a________
C) N2O5 _____m________

Is the following compound acidic or basic?

D) Ca(OH)2 _____basic______________-

__I___ ___am_______ ____basic____________

A B and C D

Time Saver – Save 10 minutes by completing the following questions.

- Acids turn litmus paper what color?
- Bases have a pH of?
- Are acids or a bases slippery?
Envelope 6
Every human entering the Rutherford planetary system needs to know the answer to the
following question. Name the compound PbO2(s) to fill in the blanks and get the answer from
Shlomo.

Compound formula:

Is ____lead_________________ ______4______________ Pencils?

First word in compound name Roman numerals of Pb
In compound name

Envelope 7 – You have made it to Rutherfords planetary system. To prove yourself in the
Rutherford planetary system you must show everyone you are fluent in the language of
chemistry.
- Convert the following compound names to formulas and formulas to names

a) Iron (II) sulfate

FeSO4

b) Ammonium chloride

(NH4)2O

c) diboron tetrachloride
B2Cl4

d) chloric acid
HClO3

e) calcium hydroxide

Ca(OH)2

Time bonus (10 minutes) – Molecular compounds are combinations of elements on what side
of the periodic table staircase? Ionic compounds are combinations of elements on what side of
the periodic table staircase?
Envelope 8 – You have proven you can speak the chemistry language fluently. The folks of
Planet Rutherford are pumped they got a new homie. So they send you of on their spacecraft
named in honor john Dalton’s theory.

It is called the _____Billiard Ball__________ spacecraft.

Pit stop – The spacecraft has a chemistry lab where new chemicals are continuously being
developed and changed. Here you must predict the products of certain reactions and identify
what kind of reaction it is to prove you are trustworthy and can keep the spacecraft safe.

a) CaCl2(s) + Na3PO4(s) → Ca3(PO4)2(s) + NaCl(s)

Reaction type ____Double replacement_____

b) NaBr(aq) + Cl2(g) → NaCl(aq) + Br2(g)

Reaction type______single replacement_____________

c) C10H8 + O2 →

Reaction type____Combustion__________

d) Mg(s) + O2(g) → MgO(s)

Reaction type______Formation____________

e) HgO(s) → Hg(l) + O2(g)

Reaction type_____Decomposition________

**Time bonus – balance the following reactions**

_____Cl2(aq) + ______MgBr2(aq) _______Br2(l) + _______MgCl2(aq)

___2__AlCl3(s) ___2___Al(s) + ___3____Cl2(g)

_____Al2(SO4)3(aq) + __3___Ba(OH)2(aq) ___2___Al(OH)3(s) + ___3___ BaSO4(s)

Envelope 9 – Success!! You are on your last leg of the race. To get back to Earth and win the
delicious choice of either a Hi-Chew or a Sour Candy. You must finish the next 3 chemistry
questions.

1. Calculate the molar mass of

a) CaCl2 – 110.98 g/mol

b) Be3N2 - 55.06 g/mol

2. How many moles are in 25.0g of nitrogen gas (tricky)?

n = m/M
m = 25.0g
M = 28.02 g/mol (diatomic)

n = 25.0/28.02 = 0.8922 mol

3. What is the mass of 2.0 moles of sodium chloride?

m = Mn
n = 2.0 mol
M= 58.44 g/mol

m = 2.0 mol (58.44g/mol) = 116.88g or 1.2 x 102g
