past that works well for you?
Feel free to raise your hand to share or
type your answer in the chat.
WHY DO WE TAKE NOTES?
● Taking notes by hand helps us process the material better
● It gives you time to reflect on what has been said or what you
have learned
● Taking notes allows us to store information in our long-term
memory
● Helps us focus our attention during lessons or while reading
● Notes can be used as a study tool
● Learning note-taking skills will help prepare you for the
independence of high school and beyond
BENEFITS OF NOTE-TAKING
Taking notes also has many personal benefits. For example,
note-taking can improve:
● Our focus
● Attention to detail
● Organizational skills
● Creativity
● Ability to prioritize
● Comprehension
● Retention
NOTE-TAKING TIPS
● Try color coding your notes
○ Colored pens, colored highlighters, or even colored paper
● Use paraphrasing and try to write down the main ideas
○ Notice the words your teacher writes on the whiteboard or on
their PowerPoint slides
○ Focus on what is bolded or italicized in your textbooks or
readings
○ Put ideas into your own words
○ Use text lingo
NOTE-TAKING TIPS
● Use pictures
○ Illustrate your notes with images, charts, or graphs
● Include diagrams or bullet points
● Don’t worry about using complete sentences
● Review your notes at the end of the day
○ Make sure your notes are accurate and complete
○ Ask yourself, “Was this the main point? If not, what was?”
○ Read notes before beginning homework in a particular subject
NOTE-TAKING TIPS
● Stay organized
○ Start with a fresh page each day for each class, whether it’s a
notebook page, Word doc, or Google doc
○ Include the date on the top of each page, and a title that
describes the content
○ Leave space between topics or ideas
○ Keep notes organized in a binder or folder
● Try using one of the following note-taking methods
Note-Taking
Methods
THE SENTENCE METHOD
● Write every thought, topic, or fact
in a new line and number them as
you go
● Write down all the information you
find important as you listen or read
● Best for taking quick and simple
notes
● Can be challenging to organize or
reflect on these notes (Oxford Learning, 2021)
THE OUTLINING METHOD
● Organizes the information into
headings and related information
● Place major points farthest to the
left, indent each more specific
point and related information
farther to the right
● Encourages the use of bullet points,
numbered lists, colored pens, and
highlighters (Reading and Writing Haven, 2020)
Q&A STYLE
● Write down questions and
answers that capture the big
picture of what was discussed
● Focus on writing conclusions
rather than just facts
● Start with a question, and then
answer it with a conclusion
