Delgado Module 6

1) The document provides worked solutions to finding the remainders when various numbers are divided by specified moduli. 2) For example, it is shown that the remainder of 555 divided by 13 is 9, and the remainder of 5552 divided by 13 is 3. 3) Other examples include finding the remainder of 156 * 167 divided by 7 (which is 5), and the remainder of 2450 - 1550 divided by 13 (which is 0).

Using your skill in modular arithmetic, find the remainders when

a. 555 is divided by 13
b. 5552 is divided by 13
c. 156 ∗ 167 is divided by 7
d. 2450 − 1550 is divided by 13
7
e. 77 is divided by 10
f. 515 is divided by 128

a. 555 ≡ 9 (mod 13)

555/13 = 42 r 9
=9 (mod 13)

b. 555^2 = 3 (mod 13)

A^B mod C = ((A mod C) ^B) mod C
555^2 mod 13 = ((555 mod 13) ^2) mod 13
= (9^2) mod 13 = 81 mod 13
= 81 ≡ 3 mod 13

c. 156 = 7 x 22 + 2
167 = 7 x 23 + 6
156 x 167 = (7 x 22 + 2) (7 x 23 + 6)
(22 x 23) x 7^2 + {(22 x 6) + (2 x 23)} x 7 + (2 x 6)
2 x 6 = 12
12 ≡ 5 mod 7

d. 24^5 = 7962624
24^50 mod 13 = (24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 * 24^5 *
24^5) mod 13
24^50 mod 13 = 7^10 mod 13 = 4 mod 13

15^5 = 759375
15^50 mod 13 = (15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 * 15^5 *
15^5) mod 13
15^50 mod 13 = 6^10 mod 13 = 4 mod 13

24^50 – 15^50 ≡ 4 – 4 ≡ 0 mod 13

e. {(7^7) ^7} mod 10

7^7=823543
823543/10= 82354 r 3 = 3 mod 10
(3^7) mod 10 = 2187 mod 10
2187/10= 218 r 7
{(7^7) ^7} mod 10 ≡ 7 mod 10

f. (5^15) mod 128

5^5 = 3125
3125/128= 24 r 53 = 53 mod 128
(53^3) mod 128 = 148877/128 = 1163 r 13
(5^15) mod 128 ≡ 13 mod 128
Honesty Clause
“As members of the Academic Community, students are expected to recognize and
uphold standards of intellectual and academic integrity. Philippine State College of
Aeronautics assumes, as a basic and minimum standard of conduct in academic matters,
that students should be honest and that they submit for credit only the products of their
own efforts.”
