BSN-1/Blk-4 N116/ M, W / 3:00-4:30 PM CONTEMPORARY WORLD QUIZ ASSIGNMENT 1 1. Define the word "ethics" based on your own understanding. In my perspective, Ethics is the systematic study of human actions from the point of view of their rightfulness or wrongfulness, as means for the attainment of the ultimate happiness. Saying that something is “unethical” basically means that it is seen as something one should not do. “Ethics” can be used narrowly defined, however, so details follow. It is the reflective study of what is good or bad in that part of human conduct for which human has some personal responsibility. In other words, Ethics is a set of standards that society places on itself and which helps guide behavior, choices and actions. 2. Cite three (3) differences between moral subjectivism and moral realism. In essence, moral subjectivism is a position that recognizes that the means of ethical debate are different from the means of debate about empirical fact while not admitting that all ethical positions have equal value. Moral realism, on the other hand, is the idea that all moral standards are relative either to the culture or the individual who hold them. Under Moral Subjectivism: Moral statements are just factual statements about the attitude the speaker holds on a particular issue. Reflects the subjective elements of morality
Reflects the evaluative elements of moral statements
While in Moral Realism This is the idea that there is no universal or absolute set of moral principles. It’s a version of morality that advocates “to each her own,” and those who follow it say, “Who am I to judge?” It is the view that moral judgments are true or false only relative to some standpoint and that no standpoint is uniquely privileged over all others.
3. Comment on the definitions of ethics proposed and explained by John
Deigh. As to John Deigh, Ethics is often defined as the study of morality but a more detailed and revealing definition. It is also study of what are good and bad ends to pursue in life and what it is right and wrong to do in the conduct of life. Which is very important for me because Ethics can give us real and practical guidance to our lives, specially nowadays, we constantly face choices that affect the quality of our lives. And by that, it is significant for us to be are aware that the choices that we make have consequences, both for ourselves and others. And it also teaches us to be aware of the responsibility we have for our actions. 4. Can philosophical ethics help create good individuals? Firstly, learning ethics provides a foundation for good judgment and decision- making. Those who lack ethical knowledge tend to judge impulsively, which is why the result is often unreasonable. And yes, philosophical ethics help create good individual because ethics guides all your decisions in all aspects and it can grant us peace of mind, emotional stability and the ability to cultivate lasting friendships and relationship among individuals.
