Maintaining a beard for men is one of the sunnahs of the Prophet Muhammad SAW which
was started to be abandoned by Muslims. This practice is often considered strange by some
circles and makes people feel uncomfortable. Though maintaining a beard is the
recommended Sunnah of the Prophet. The researchers found that beards are not just orders of
religious law, but more than that, maintaining beards is beneficial for health. The Prophet
SAW narrated by Ibn Umar who said, "Contrast you with polytheists, keep beards and shave
mustaches" (Narrated by Bukhari)In this hadith, the Prophet SAW emphasized the word
"keep" where in other narrations it is interpreted as "leave it or set it". This means the Prophet
Muhammad indeed ordered Muslims to do this practice. This command contains education
for Muslims so that they have their own personalities that are different from those of
unbelievers at birth and in mind, both appearance and lifestyle.
It turns out that not only is a religious command, maintaining beards proves to be
scientifically healthy. Moreover, in terms of shaving the beard, there are elements that oppose
nature and resemble women. Because the beard is a symbol of male perfection and a sign that
distinguishes it from women.
This is evidenced by the study of Doctor Daniel G. Freeman, from the University of Chicago.
He researched a group of Postgraduate students about their feelings towards a bearded man.
The result they say that the presence of a beard makes men look more masculine for women,
independent, sophisticated and mature compared to men clean shaved face Behind it all, there
are health benefits from the hair that grows around the man's lips. Here are a number of
reasons why maintaining a beard is good for health.
1. Prevent Skin Cancer
Based on the results of research scientists at the University of Southern Queensland and
published in the journal Radiation Protection Dosimetry states that 90-95 percent of UV
exposure from the sun to the face can be blocked by beard. This will slow the skin aging
process and reduce the risk of skin cancer. As is known, the sun has ultraviolet content that
can endanger the health of the skin and is prone to skin cancer. The thicker the beard on a
man's face, the higher the level of protection.
According to Dr. Nick Lowe, a well-known dermatologist in London, generally provides
good protection against sunlight. That is why, he continued, women experience less sun
damage if their hair covers their neck and sides.
2. Reducing Asthma and Allergy Symptoms
How can? Just as nose hair functions as a filter, the beard also functions the same as a filter
and prevents the symptoms of asthma and allergies. As is known that asthma symptoms are
usually triggered by dust and dust found in facial hair or more specifically is a large sideburn
and if stuck on the sideburn, it can reduce asthma symptoms that may occur.
The beard that reaches the nose area may stop the allergen from rising to the nose and be
sucked by the lungs, said Carol Walker, a hair health expert and owner of the Birmingham
Trichology Center.
"In theory, beards can stop anything that triggers asthma to enter the respiratory tract but the
shape must be large," said Dr. Felix Chua, consultant respiratory system at the London
Clinic.
3. Slow down aging
Beard appearance can make faces look older, but who would have thought beards could
actually avoid skin aging? Beard can help reduce the symptoms of aging and keep the face
moist. Beard can protect the face from wind and cold air that can make facial skin dry.
As hair on the face often can help the skin to stay young and in good condition. By protecting
it from the wind, which makes the skin dry and disrupts the skin barrier.
Warm
Beard can make your face warmer than when you don't keep a beard or what people call
"bearded". So when you enter the rainy season, you don't have to worry about low
temperatures which might also cause disease.
4. Prevent infection
You don't need to worry that your beard will cause bacterial infections, infection with hair
follicles that cause spots, and so on. Precisely this infection can be more threatening than the
habit of shaving too often. Not shaving a beard means no reddish rash. According to Dr.
Martin Wade, consultant dermatologist at the London Skin and Hair Clinic, shaving beards is
usually the main cause of bacterial infections around beards
"This can cause redness due to razors, hair that does not grow and conditions such as
folliculitis, so men benefit from maintaining beards," he said
5. Natural moisturizer
You don't need to worry about dry skin. Hair avoids wind and cold air from the part of the
face that is covered, so that it can help avoid dryness. The sebaceous oil gland also helps keep
the skin moist when you keep a beard.
Muslim man, are you ready to practice the sunnah of the Prophet SAW by changing his
appearance with a beard? Isn't this practice not only applied to Muslims, even non-Muslims
like Charles Darwin, Louis Pastar, Abrahim Lincon and even Jesus wearing a beard. How to
share with Muslim men who clearly have become orders not to practice the sunnah.
