Mathematics Pre O'Level

The document provides information about mathematics topics for Pre-O Level Cambridge students. It lists chapters from the Oxford New Syllabus Mathematics 7th Edition Book 1 and Book 2 that cover ratio, rate, time, speed, direct and inverse proportion, geometrical construction, perimeter and area of plane figures, and volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders. It then provides explanations and examples of 2D and 3D shapes, perimeter, area, formulas to calculate perimeter and area of rectangles, squares, circles, and triangles. It also gives examples of calculating perimeter and area when figures are joined or when one figure is removed from another.

Chapter 13
Area And Perimeter Of
Basic And Plane Figures
Perimeter
The perimeter is the length of the
outline of a shape. To find the
perimeter of a rectangle or square
you have to add the lengths of all
the four sides.
OR
The sum of all the sides.
Example of Perimeter
Area
• The area can be defined as the space
occupied by a flat shape or the surface of
an object. The area of a figure is the
number of unit squares that cover the
surface of a closed figure. Area is
measured in square units such as square
centimeters, square feet, square inches,
etc.
Example of Area

Area of Rectangle is length multiplied by

breadth
So, area becomes 15
5 cm
• Find perimeter and area of given square:
Solution:
According to formula
Perimeter = 5cm + 5cm + 5cm + 5cm = 20 cm
Area = l2 = 5 cm × 5 cm = 25 cm2

• Find perimeter and area of given rectangle:

4 cm

Solution:
2 cm
According to formula
Perimeter = 4cm + 2cm + 4cm + 2cm = 12 cm
Area = l × b = 4 cm × 2 cm = 8 cm2
• Find perimeter and area of given circle:
Solution:
According to formula 4 cm

Circumference = 2πr
=2×3.142×4 cm
=25.136 cm
Area = πr2
= 3.142×(4cm)2
= 43.988 cm2
• Find perimeter and area of given triangle:
Solution: 4.
5
cm
According to formula 4 cm

Perimeter = a + b + c
2 cm
= 4 cm + 4.5 cm + 2 cm
= 10 cm
Area = ½ × b × h
= ½ × 2 cm × 4 cm
= 4 cm2
(If two figures are joined)
• Find perimeter and area:
Solution:
According to formula
Area:
Area of triangle = ½ × b × h
Area of Semi-Circle= ½ πr2 (Add both areas)
Perimeter:
Perimeter of Semi-Circle = ½ 2πr
Perimeter of Triangle=Side1+Side
(Add both perimeters)
(Book 1--Ex:13A-- Question 6(b)—Pg:322)
(If one figure is removed from another)
• Find perimeter and area:
Solution:
According to formula
Area:
Area of Square=l2
Area of Triangle= ½ × b × h (Subtract both areas)
Perimeter:
Perimeter of square=4l(Subtract both perimeters)
Perimeter of triangle=Side1+Side+Side3
(Book 1--Ex:13A-- Question 3—Pg:322)
