DISCUSSION:
ARCHITECTURE
Architecture is a form of art concerned with styles, methods and design of constructing
buildings. It is the oldest of the fine arts.

Religious aspect
Architectural styles:
Egyptian Architecture
Great Sphinx (the body of recumbent lion and the head of a divine king) is among the world’s
best known and most admired ancient treasures.
Pyramids are famous structures in Egypt.
Nowadays, we could see some houses with Egyptian style in their kitchen roof.
Roman architecture
Colosseum remains a world-famous landmark today. The walls had 80 entrance arches, called
vomitoria. This structure could seat 50,000 people during that time. But the INC Philippine Arena
breaks this record because the capacity of this structure is more than 50,000.
There are some houses with doors inspired by this arched style of Roman architecture.
Romanesque architecture has a very heavy walls with small windows opening and a heavy stone
roof. It is called as a little-like Roman because its windows have arched style.
Byzantine Architecture
Hagia Sophia or Church of Divine Wisdom has a large dome in the middle of structure. Its
distinguishing feature is the central dome with small domes around it. Best example is the St.
Joseph Cathedral in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija.
Mesopotamian Architecture
Mesopotamia (Iraq) means “land between two rivers “. It was called the fertile crescent because
of the fertility of the soil caused by the two rivers. It was said to be the birthplace of civilization.
Ziggurat is an example of Mesopotamian architecture, built in successive levels. We imitate this
architectural style, that’s why we have our buildings with second floor, third floor, and so forth
Gothic Architecture
It is characterized by pointed arch, making the buildings and cathedrals appear larger and taller.
The structures usually have two towers and three doorways. Best example is the church of Iglesia
ni Cristo.
Japanese architecture
Japanese houses have thin walls because of the mild climate and overlapping, slanted, and
slightly curved roof.
Main halls are called kondo, hondo, amidado or hatto. The sacred objects of worship such as
statues are displayed in the main hall.
Lecture halls are for meetings and lectures.
Pagodas store remains of the Buddha such as tooth usually in the form of a representation.
Bell is placed in a structure. The temple bells are rung 108 times during new year’s eve,
corresponding to the Buddhist concept of 108 worldly desires. Here in the Philippines, we are
using cans, aluminum pails, basins, etc to make noise at 12 midnight of December 31. This means
that we welcome New Year.
Philippine Architecture
Philippine Architecture is an elusive thing.
Huts are best examples of Philippine architecture.
Leandro Locsin is the late national hero for Philippine architecture.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines was designed by Leandro Locsin.
Torogan is the ancestral house of the Maranao sultan; it is a salakot –shaped roof.
Modern architecture
Characteristics: simplification of form and elimination of ornament.
Materials such as iron, steel, concrete and glass drove the invention of new building techniques
as part of the Industrial Revolution.
EVALUATION:

Board, wooden chopping board or anything that you can use
