Development is a process that creates growth, progress, positive change or the addition of

physical, economic, environmental, social and demographic components.  The purpose of

development is a rise in the level and quality of life of the population, and the creation or
expansion of local regional income and employment opportunities, without damaging the
resources of the environment.  Development is visible and useful, not necessarily immediately,
and includes an aspect of quality change and the creation of conditions for a continuation of that
change. On the other hand development is an improvement in the living standards of people
through marking available opportunities of well paying employment, provision of quality
educational and healthy services as well as leisure time for majority population. Furthermore,
there are hundreds of economic, political and social indicators of development, ranging
from ‘Hard’ economic indicators such as Gross National Income (and all its variations),
to various poverty and economic inequality indicators, to the Sustainable Development
Goals, which focus much more on social indicators of development such as education
and health, all the way down to much more subjective development indicators such as
happiness. However in this essay I will endeavor to explain the concept ‘development’
and discuss the indicators of social, economical and political development.

Industrialization and social economic infrastructure is one indicator that a country is

experiencing development, a growing expansion in the number of industries and social
economic infrastructure such as railways, tarred roads, airports, mines, factories,
mechanized farms, heal facilities, shopping malls, educational institutions like schools,
colleges and universities, modern residential houses and recreation facilities.

Urbanization can be defined as the formation of urban areas. However, in a country

where there is social economic development, there is an increasing urbanization, the
rural agriculture and traditional population is decreasing while the urban modern
population is growing. In simple words, traditional life style must disappear and
modern Urban facilities and life style must replace the so called village life.

Social economic development brings about productivity and employment to the people.
In other words, a country developing socially and economically there is rise in
productivity in the economy. However, when there is economic development there is an
increase in the amount of goods and services produced in the economy of a particular
country. In addition, economic development leads to availability of jobs to the majority
of families in the country like Zambia, especially in the urban industrial sector, so that
heads of families can earn enough income to buy goods and services required by their
families.
