Recently, I went to work in a new office and as soon as I arrived I made the 0 mistake of getting the receptionist’s
name wrong. She was not happy about it but because we were 1 and hadn’t actually met before it wasn’t too
embarrassing. The office was beautiful and decorated really well and it was definitely 2 than my last office. Most of
the pictures were 3 of the country around the town we were in. One of them really caught my attention because it
was of the 4 and what really made me like it was the way the sea crashed against them in an almost abstract way.
At lunch, some colleagues took me out to a restaurant near the office. The food was nice but when I saw that there were thousands
of 5 on the table I wasn’t very pleased. My colleague suggested that as I had spotted the insects I should
6
to the waiter or the manager. I decided that it would be better if I waited and sent in a comment through their
7
. I did this when I got back to the office using the 8 I had brought with me, although I found
it harder than normal because I find typing on a touch screen can sometimes take a long time. I tried to make the comments a
mixture of positive and negative because I really did enjoy the food and the service was excellent, so I really didn’t want to
9
to their reputation over such a small thing.
In the end, I sent the complaint and they responded by offering me a free meal for 10 and three guests, so we all
went back there the following day and it was perfect.

READING
A Read the text below and decide whether the statements (1–5) are true (T) or false (F) according to what the writer believes.

News Media Blog

Traditional news outlets, like newspapers, radio programmes and the news shown on the television, still exist,
but the internet has revolutionised the speed at which ‘news’ is delivered. Although the benefits of this are
huge it is not necessarily all good as it means that news stories can become publicly viewable without being
fully checked for general accuracy.
Looking back to early part of the 20th century, people relied on newspapers to deliver their daily news. Much
of this information may have even been a few days old as it would have taken reporters some time to access
the stories. However, this was the general pace of life and did not present much of an issue. There were also
far fewer news reporters at this time and articles were perhaps less insightful, acting more as vessels for fact
sharing rather than a way of expressing opinions.
Now fast forward to today. Everyone is a reporter and it seems everyone has a fact they would like to share
with the world. We are constantly being updated through news feeds from many sources and we decide what
we want to know and how we want to be informed about it.
Two issues have arisen as a result. The first is the idea that we all have the chance to consume only the news
we want to. The news that we understand and the news that already agrees with what we think or feel about
a subject. This is often referred to as the echo chamber and has the effect of limiting what we know, and any
new news is just a repetition of agreement of what we already think. A second concern is that of ‘fake news’.
A term used to mean news that has no grounding in fact but instead represents news as entertainment. I feel
that this is something we need to be concerned about as it could have many negative consequences.
So, we can ask ourselves: is real news dead? My answer is no. I am aware that there are some issues, but if
we as consumers decide to consume trusted sources of what is actually happening there is very little need
to worry.

The writer believes

0 the internet has changed the news we receive. T
1 early newspapers reported things as they happened.
2 nowadays the news changes constantly.
3 we only find out about things that interest us.
4 that fake news is entertaining but dangerous.
5 that real news will disappear.

B Read the text about architecture and match the words in bold (1–5) to their synonyms (a–g). There is an extra word you do not
need. An example (0) has been done for you.

Architecture
Designing things with (0) biomimetic principles, taking inspiration from nature, is not a new concept;
the history of the subject goes back centuries but only recently has the concept been pushed to the
front of people’s minds with the hopes of developing more efficient and sustainable things for future
use. Undoubtedly, there are (1) myriad examples of this but of the many to choose from here are three
common examples.
We are, in general, surrounded by things that are truly very clever and we see them as everyday objects and
we never really realise where these great ideas come from. Take, for example, something as simple as Velcro
which was reportedly invented by copying the bur fruit. Although many people believe Velcro was shared by
(2) extra-terrestrials, it is quite clear that a more likely source of the invention or inspiration was from the
hooks on the bur fruit or seed that is commonly found around the world in nature.
Nature is also being copied in modern architecture and engineering. One ingenious example of this is that of
the Eastgate shopping centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. Here the designer was inspired by a (3) termite mound.
These mounds are huge insect homes that can get very hot but are made by the termites to be self-cooling so
they don’t overheat. In using this design feature it is estimated that the energy consumption needed to cool
the mall is approximately 10% of that of a normal building of its size.
Another fascinating example of this type of design can be seen in the development of wind turbines that are
used to turn wind into electrical energy. Designers have been studying owls’ wings, especially the section at
the back that allows the owl to hunt in silence. This ‘design’ is now being used as a (4) blueprint in an effort to
produce more energy while at the same time reducing noise.
It is incredible to think that the development of so much modern technology that is being produced is
an (5) amalgam of nature and humankind’s desire to create practical everyday objects that are useful
and efficient.

0 biometric a a copying nature

1 myriad b mixture

2 extra-terrestrials c people

3 termite d aliens

4 blueprint e plans

5 amalgam f thousands
