Lesson 15: Pictures in Worksheets

Lesson Goals:
● Discover how to insert images in a worksheet
● Become familiar with the Picture Tools
● Become familiar with the Shapes button

Online Pictures
Excel lets you insert graphics in your worksheet. You can easily add pictures into
Excel from file or even from online.

Inserting Online Pictures in a Worksheet

1. Open the worksheet where you want to insert an
online picture.
2. In the Illustrations group on the Insert tab, click on
Online Pictures. The Insert Pictures window will
appear.
3. In the Search for box, enter a keyword for the picture
you want.
4. Click on the Search button. The search results appear.
5. Use the scroll bar to view the images. Click on a
picture and click the Insert button. The picture appears
in the worksheet.

Resizing an Image
1. Click on the inserted picture. Eight hollow
circles, called sizing handles appear around
the picture, as well as the half circular arrow,
called the rotating handle.

2. Do any of the following:

● To change the height of the picture,
drag the middle top or middle bottom
sizing handle.
● Notice the pointer changes to double
arrows as you bring it over the sizing handles.
● To change the width, drag the middle-left or middle-right sizing handle.
● To resize proportionally, drag any of the four corner sizing handles.

The Picture Tools

Excel allows you to edit images you have added to your worksheets. To access these
tools, click on the picture you want to edit. The Picture Tools appear, grouped under the
Format tab.
There are four groups of tools under the Format tab. Notice how these are similar to
the tools used in formatting shapes and images in Word and PowerPoint.

The Adjust group lets you modify the brightness and contrast of the picture, as well as
recolor, compress, reset and even replace the picture.

The Picture Styles group has preset styles you can readily use. There are tools for
modifying a picture’s shape and border and for applying special affects.

The Arrange group lets you bring an image to the font of another image or send it
behind. You also have tools for aligning, grouping and rotating pictures.

The Size group features tools for cropping and resizing pictures.

The Shapes Button

Shapes can also be added to a worksheet.
1. Open the worksheet where you want to
insert a shape.
2. On the Insert tab, in the illustration group,
click on the Shapes button.
3. Go through the shape categories, and click
on the shape you like.
● Recently Used Shapes- gives you
quick access to shapes you have just
used.
● Lines- lets you draw straight or
curved lines, single or double
arrows, elbow or curved connectors,
freeform lines, and scribbles.
Connectors are used to connect
elements in a flowchart.
● Rectangles- lets you draw different types of rectangles, be they regular,
rounded or with snipped corners.
● Basic Shapes- lets you draw often used shapes, icons, braces and brackets.
● Block Arrows- lets you draw different types of arrows.
● Equation Shapes- features shapes used in mathematical operations.
● Flowchart- lets you draw flowcharting shapes.
