Final Assignment - M&I-Sec C

This document provides instructions for a final assignment on measurement and instrumentation. It consists of 3 questions worth a total of 20 marks. Question 1 involves deriving mathematical expressions for parameters of a potential transformer, including its ratio and phase angle. Question 2 involves developing Lissajous patterns based on different frequency and amplitude ratios of X and Y axis signals. Question 3 involves solving two problems: one on a current transformer's primary current and error calculations, and another on electrical strain gauges in a bridge circuit. Students are instructed to show working, take photos of their work, and submit a single PDF file by the deadline.

Final Assignment (Theory)

1) Derive the mathematical expression of the following parameters of a Potential Transformer (PT)
with appropriate phasor diagram: [5.0+2.0 =7.0]
(i) Transformer ratio (R) and
(ii) Phase angle (𝜃)

2) Develop the Lissajous Patterns (a) if Ratio of Y-axis to X-axis signal frequency is 4:3.
Consider the same amplitude for the both Y-axis and X-axis signal. (b) Y-axis voltage
magnitude is twice X-axis voltage magnitude and are in phase. [1.5 x 2= 3.0]

3) Solve the following problems: [5.0 x 2 =10.0]

a) A bar-type CT has 420 turns in the secondary winding. An ammeter connected to the secondary has
a resistance of 1 Ω and reactance of 1.3 Ω, and the secondary winding impedance is (0.8 + j0.8) Ω.
The magnetizing MMF requirement for the core is 80 A-turns and to supply the iron loss the current
required is 25 A. Find the primary winding current and also determine the ratio error when the
ammeter in the secondary winding shows 7A.
Also determine the phase angle error. What type of modification is needed in the ammeter
construction to reduce the phase angle error?

b) Two electrical strain gauge resistances bonded to a Duralumin cantilever and are connected into a
bridge circuit. Each gauge has a resistance of 120Ω. The strain gauge resistances are subjected to a
stress of 110 MN/m2. If the modulus of elasticity of steel is 180 GN/m2, calculate (a) the output
voltage if the detector has a resistance of 9kΩ. (b) the resistance of the detector if 25µA current is
flowing through it. Given that, the gauge factor is 1.8.
