Tuning Protocol
Reflecting back on my connected lessons I see many areas for improvement and also
opportunities for different directions I could take each lesson. One thing I learned that I have
heard many times but was able to experience was how much easier the lesson planning is when
you plan with the end in mind. I worked on my lesson plans knowing that they connected but I
could have improved the delivery had I backed up and looked at what I wanted to accomplish
overall. During my analysis I see how I get wrapped up in the content itself. When looking back
on the lessons together I see there were opportunities I missed to pull the students in and
engage them on the topic on a more personal level. The tuning protocol helped me look
beyond just covering the topic and focus more on my overall teaching.
As a new teacher I realize I get lost in my content and lose my connection with the
students. Seeing when this happens, I can plan for more deliberate pauses or planning for
myself until I get to a point where it becomes more natural to me. By reviewing my content, I
could also see where I wasn’t as comfortable as I was with other points in my lesson. Instead of
using the same technique it would a good idea to try different methods. It seems daunting but
the more I change it up the more I will learn how to adjust within a lesson if needed depending
on how the students respond. At times the class responds well and we have a good rapport but
depending if students are gone for the day or other external factors could change the dynamic
of our class. Reflecting on my lesson plans it occurred to me that I would prepare them planning
on the lesson to go a certain way and that it would be helpful to have a better planned back up
plan in place. If I am unable to engage the students with my planned activity have something
else listed as a back-up. The students may appreciate the change up and the variety may help
pull them back in. The tuning protocol helped me realize that this is something I should keep in
mind when putting together my lesson plan. Solely giving the information or having the
students read through the article may not convey what I want it to for them to see the
connection.
If teaching these lessons again I would have tried to connect more with the students on
the topics. Especially in my larger class I would break them down into smaller groups for a small
group discussion and then return to the larger group. Hopefully students who are not
comfortable speaking in front of the entire class would participate. At this time I could listen
and observe the groups and hear what they are coming up with on their own. Based on those
smaller conversations we could cover what I felt the kids didn’t grasp or answer any questions
Looking at all the content I covered through the three lessons I would take more class
time to cover the information. I would like to create more of a connection with the chapter
content and the reasoning behind doing the presentations. Identity theft is a fairly familiar term
to this age of students but reinforcing what we should look for as adults could have been
communicated clearer. The extended class time would have given me more time to cover
examples and preparation for professional business presentations. This was the first time we
have done a presentation for our classmates during this semester. We’ve done partner projects
but have not presented anything in front of the class. Taking more time to establish my
expectations would hopefully encourage students to take more time on their investment in this
presentation.
A few groups were allowed to work in a group of three. This is an odd number for the
presentation and the amount of content that they covered. The groups that I allowed a third
member did not increase their quality of presentation or content covered. The smaller class had
a few that worked alone and some of the higher examples of work came from the students who
presented by themselves. They were responsible for their entire presentation and had less
distractions. Those students also seemed to have picked topics they were familiar with and so
their research enhanced what they communicated to the class. In the future I don’t think I
would allow any three person groups. Again, I refer back to having clearer expectations for the
presentation portion of the assignment. The assignment is currently set up for one or two
members and even as a partner project I would go back and reiterate that both members need
to equally participate in the presentation and research. That should be evident when they
present to the class and then clearly communicate to the students that this will be reflected in
their grades.
Overall, I learned more about myself through this assignment than I thought I would. I
assumed I knew what my weaknesses were. When I reviewed my video for analysis, I surprised
myself with how it helped me identify ways for improvement. Having others input I find helpful
and I didn’t assume I would find the same benefit from my own review. I certainly did and was
pleasantly surprised. It was a different perspective to reflect on the lessons and review for
myself what worked for me and what did not. Especially as a new teacher I think doing this
engaging teacher for the students. I feel comfortable engaging with them in small talk but part
of that relationship is connecting with them through my class and so making these
improvements seem absolutely necessary. The tuning protocol was helpful for me and helped
me see quickly areas I can improve and starting point to try different approaches in my
classroom.
