MELC 1: Identify the different type of listening strategies.

Strategies of Listening:
1. Attentive Listening is paying close attention to what is said. It requires concentration.
But when one is not listening at all or his mind wanders away from what is being said, this
behavior is non responsive or MARGINAL LISTENING.
2. Selective or Informative Listening is simply listening to understand or to be
informed. This occurs almost every day in our lives. An example of this type of listening is when
you listen to the instruction or discussion of your teacher. Another example is listening to news
from the radio, newscasts, weather bulletins, traffic updates and announcements. The main goal
of listening is for you to understand the message and obtain the information that you need.
3. Critical Listening is determining whether the information listened to is complete and
accurate and includes evaluating its relevance and worth. AN example is when you listen to a
political speech and appraise the claims of the speaker. As such, you try to determine the truth
value of the speaker’s claim. Evaluation takes place when the ideas of the speaker are scrutinized
and probed.
4. Appreciative Listening is showing enjoyment through one’s feeling, mood and
gestures while listening to poetry, stories and music.
