Agenda
•Current Status of DC Standards

•TIA 942

•ANSI/BICSI 002

•Cabling Standards Update

•Summary
Current Status of DC Standards
•Several industry standards addressing DC design
and implementation

•These standards may be used in whole or in part

to define DC standards for a given project

•Many standards development organizations have

been cross-referenced by each of these DC
standards

•Which DC standard is best?

Global DC Standards
•AS/NZS 2834 (1995): “Computer Accommodation” 46 pgs

•ANSI/TIA-942 (2005):"Telecommunications Infrastructure

Standard for Data Centers" 139 pgs

•ISO/IEC 24764 (2010): "Information Technology - Generic

Cabling for Data Centre Premises“ 46 pgs.

•ANSI/BICSI-002 (2010): "Data Center Design and

Implementation Best Practices" 225 pgs.
TIA-942 Design Elements
•Cabling Design

•Network Design

•Facilities Design

•Pathways & Spaces

•Racks/Cabinets

•Informative Annexes
Containing “Best Practices”

Distance
Recommendations:
Min.- 900mm (1.5 tiles)
Ideal- 1200mm (2 tiles)

DC Tier Levels

Institute

450mm 900mm

Note: - Tiers are Uptime Institute trademark

- 2 x Tier 2 cheaper than 1 x Tier 4
- Don’t need same Tier level in all DC
BICSI-002 DC Standard
The intent of the BICSI-002 standard is to:
•Define best practices for design and
implementation of data centres

•Complement the TIA and ISO data centre

design standards

•Where possible, avoid duplication of content

already available

•Provide references to other applicable

standards and guidelines such as ISO,
CENELEC, TIA, ASHRAE, and IEEE

•$400 for BICSI members.

BICSI-002 Section Contents
•Space Planning
- Power, cooling, support spaces, eqpt. placement,
network architecture
•Site Selection
- Location, regs, environ., utilities, transport
•Architectural & Structural
•Electrical & Mechanical Systems
- Thermal management, CRACs/ chillers
•Fire Protection
•Security & Building Automation Systems
•Telecommunications •Plus 3 Informative Annexes

TIA-942 Recent Revisions
•Recent amendments:
- 942-1 Addendum 1 Coax cabling
media added
- 942-2 Addendum 2 Specific
administration and spaces

•Revision A is expected in 2011 –

Draft is well on its way
TIA-942-A
Expected updates include:

•Addition of Intermediate cross-connects (IDA) to DC

architecture
•Addition of OM4 to horizontal and backbone cabling
•Recognition and recommendation of Cat.6A cabling for
horizontal and backbone cabling
•Relaxation of humidity and temperature requirements to
improve energy efficiency
•Considerable trimming of the redundancy tiers section to
focus on the cabling aspects
•Standardization of the LC connector for up to 2 fibre
interfaces
•Standardization of the MPO connector for more than two
fibres
DC Standards Summary
•BICSI-002 covers all aspects of a
Data Centre Build and has excellent
Best Practices

•TIA-942-A will be the best DC

standard when it is revised and
issued sometime in 2011

•TIA-942-A + BICSI-002 best long

term option
Green Cabling Options

Traditionally four cabling options:

•PVC
•LSZH
•Plenum
•LCC
Green Star Ratings
•What does it take to get 4, 5 or 6 stars?
- Building Management (Waste, Commission, GSAP) 9%
- Indoor Environment Quality (Air, Light, View, VOC) 20%
- Energy (Greenhouse Gas, Light, Power Density) 25%
- Transport (Public Transport, Cycling, Car Parks) 8%
- Water (Water Use, Heat Reject Water, Meters) 15%
- Materials (Building & Material Reuse, PVC, Design) 14%
- Land Use & Ecology (Contaminated & Reuse Land) 4%
- Emissions (Discharge to Sewer, Refrigerant ODP/GWP) 5%
- Innovation (Exceeding Benchmarks, Environ Initiative)
•Also conditional requirements
- Not: agricultural land, old growth forest, near wetland
•PVC Credit (2 pts out of 137)
•LSZH likely to still be used for some time to come
Standards Update - IEEE
•Energy Efficient Ethernet
- 10GBASE-T started at 17W/port & now 3.5W/port; Short Reach
(30m): 2.5W/port
•High Speed Ethernet
- 40 GbE (8 fibres) and 100GbE (20 Fibres); Terabit Ethernet??
•IEEE 802.3an - 10GBase-T
- Class EA/Cat.6A designed to support over 100m (cf. CX-4 twinax of 7m)
- Compare with Infiniband on CX-4 twinax to 7m
•IEEE 802.11n - High Speed WiFi
- 100 Mbps at 5 GHz (using MIMO technology)
•IEEE 802.11s - Wireless Mesh
- Ideal for outdoor CCTV connection
•IEEE 802.3at - PoE Plus
- 24W-30W in lieu of 12W- 13W, but more power equals more…
- RJ45 outlets Vs GPOs
- PoE++ - in draft form (80W-100W) – DC based servers?
PoE Plus Available Now

60W over 4Pr!

DC Environmental Monitoring

•Environmental harm such as extreme

temperatures, humidity and flooding
•Temperature: 20oC to 25oC
•Humidity: 40% to 55%
•Maximum Rate of Change: 5oCper Hour
•Sprinkler systems

Summary
•Many DC Standards

•TIA 942-A and BICSI_002 best long term option

•LSZH still best option for Green Star rated

buildings

•High Speed & Energy Efficient Ethernet

•Power Ethernet Plus to have major impact
