Lesson 5 - Normal Distribution

This document provides examples of calculating areas under the standard normal distribution curve and finding z-values that correspond to given areas. It also gives two word problems involving finding probabilities or values given a normal distribution with a certain mean and standard deviation. The first word problem asks to find probabilities of blood pressure being above 130, below 150, and between 125 and 158 for a group with mean 132 and standard deviation 8. The second asks to find the upper and lower blood pressure readings that would qualify for a medical study if 40% of people are to be selected from a population with mean 120 and standard deviation 8.

SATUR MST – MATHEMATICS

Exercises A: Find the area under the standard normal distribution curve.

1. Between 0 and 0.47

2. Between -1.75 and 0

3. Between -2.56 and 1.21

Area = A1 + A2
= 0.4948 + 0.3869
Area = 0.8817

4. To the right of 0.44

Area = 0.5 – 0.1700 = 0.3300
5. To the right of -1.42
A = 0.5 – 0.4222 = 0.0778

6. To the left of -1.6

A = 0.5 – 4452 = 0.0548

7. To the left of 0.78

A = 0.5 – 0.2823 = 0.2177

Find the z value that corresponds to the given area.

1. z = 2.13

2. z = 1.32

3. z = 1.98
Exercises B

1. If the systolic blood pressure for a certain group of obese people has a mean
of 132 and a standard deviation of 8, find the probability that a randomly
selected person will have the following will have the following blood pressure.
Assume the variable is normally distributed.
a. above 130
x = 130
130−132
z= =−0.2 5
8

Therefore, P ( z>−0.25 )=0.0987+ 0.5=0.5987

b. below 150
x = 150
15 0−132
z= =2.25
8

Therefore, P ( z<2.25 )=0.5−0.4878=0.0122

c. between 125 and 158
x = 125
125−132
z= =−0.88
8
x = 158
158−132
z= =3.25
8

Therefore, P (−0.88> z >3.25 )=0.3106+0.4994=0.8100

2. For a medical study, a researcher wishes to select people in the middle of

40% of the population based on blood pressure. If the mean systolic blood
pressure is 120 and the standard deviation is 8, find the upper and lower
reading that would qualify people to participate in the study.

Solution:
Let’s assume that the people’s blood pressure (denoted by letter x) is a
normally distributed with the mean of 120 and standard deviation of 8. Find z
values that enclose middle 40% of the blood pressures:

1−0.40
z= =± 0. 3
2

X l =( 8 ) (−0.3 )=11 8
X u =( 8 ) ( 0.3 ) +120=12 2
