This document establishes the structure of civil and electromechanical engineering. It discusses civil engineering and electromechanical engineering, including their definitions and key areas. It then summarizes the Faidherbe Bridge project in Senegal, describing its features such as length and spans, the opening of its rotating span, and the structures involved in its renovation from 2008 to 2011.

ESTABLISHING A STRUCTURE IN CIVIL AND

ELECTROMECHANICAL ENGINEERING
GENERALITY:
Engineering is the set of functions that lead from the design and studies, from the purchase
and control of equipment manufacturing, to the construction and commissioning of a
technical or industrial installation. By extension, the term is also often used in other fields:
we speak for example of computer engineering.
This activity is currently carried out mainly by so-called 'engineering companies' which study,
design and commission all or part of a development (port, road, etc.), a structure (hospital,
factory, etc.) or equipment (Airbus section, electric vehicle, etc.).
An engineer is a professional designing projects, if possible, by innovative means, and
leading the realization and implementation of the whole: products, systems or services
involving solving complex technical problems.
I. Civil Engineering and Electromechanical Engineering:

1. Civil Engineering:
Civil engineering is the set of activities, techniques necessary for the realization of civil
constructions. Civil engineers deal with the design, construction, operation and
rehabilitation of constructions works and infrastructures, which they manage to meet the
need of society; accomplishments are mainly divided into five main areas of intervention:
structures, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation and the environment. The field of
application of civil engineering is very vast, it includes public works and the buildings.
2. Electromechanical Engineering:
Electrical engineering is a branch of physics that deals with the field of electricity and its
applications. It brings together the fields of electrical engineering and electronic engineering.
The domain study is realized in physics, the application is done in the industrial field.
Mechanical engineering refers to the body of knowledge related to mechanics, the physical
sense (movement sciences) and the technical sense (study of mechanisms). This field of
knowledge ranges from the design of a mechanical product to the recycling of the latter
through manufacturing, maintenance, etc.
Electromechanics, also called electrical engineering, is the combination of electricity and
mechanics. At the beginning of the applications of the electricity, this one was very often
only a source of energy at the service of the mechanics.
II. Civil and Mechanical Construction Project: THE FAIDHERBE BRIDGE
1. Features:
• Total length: 511 m
• Width: 6.20 m
• It consists of 5 spans of 77 m, a rotating span of 72 m and a span of 43 m.

2. Opening of the rotating span:

The Faidherbe Bridge project in St Louis (Senegal) has reached an important milestone: The
T2 swing span was implemented in early March 2011. Following ship collisions, the turning
span had been out of service for many years. On March 6, 2011, after its shift, the new T2
bay was opened for the first time.
This bay rests on a turntable and is actuated by a mechanism located under the FAIDHERBE
bridge more precisely in the pillar that supports the span. (See videos)
3. The structures in charge of the FAIDHERBE bridge:
Having suffered from advanced corrosion, it was renovated during 3 years, from 2008 to
2011, by the Berthold BTP, Eiffage Senegal, Eiffage construction metal group, and the
engineering companies SGI Consulting and Setec TPI. The renovated bridge was
inaugurated on 19 November by the President of the Republic of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade.
The total cost of rehabilitation was 225 billion CFA francs.
The bridge was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
Composed mainly of seven steel arches, the FAIDHERBE bridge has a paved road since 2011.
It has on both sides of its length a pedestrian walkway in wood.
