Oscilloscope Tutorial
An oscilloscope is used to display circuit voltages. It can measure and show any DC or oscillating
voltage and provide the user with measurement of the voltage level, frequency, period, phase shift, etc.
The Display
Take a look at the oscilloscope display. Notice the grid markings on the screen - these markings create
the graticule. Each vertical and horizontal line constitutes a major division. The graticule is usually laid
out in an 8-by-10 division pattern. Labeling on the oscilloscope controls (such as volts/div and sec/div)
always refers to major divisions. The tick marks on the center horizontal and vertical graticule lines
(see Figure 1) are called minor divisions.
Many oscilloscopes display on the screen how many volts each vertical division represents and how
many seconds each horizontal division represents. Many oscilloscopes also have 0%, 10%, 90%, and
100% markings on the graticule (see Figure 1) to help make rise time measurements.
This method allows you to make a quick, visual estimate. For example, you might look at a waveform
amplitude and determine that it is a little more than 2 V. You can take simple measurements by
counting the major and minor graticule divisions involved and multiplying by the scale factor. For
example, if you counted five major vertical graticule divisions between the minimum and maximum
values of a waveform and knew you had a scale factor of 100 mV/division, then you could easily
calculate your peak-to-peak voltage as follows: 4 divisions x 500 mV/division = 2 V.
Frequency = 1/time = 1/(4*2.50ms)=100 Hz
Voltage = (4*500mv) = 2 volts
Volts / div: This changes the scale of the vertical axis, which in effect makes your signal waveform
appear taller or shorter. For example, a setting of 500mV indicates that each division on the screen is
worth 500mV. Whenever you are scoping a signal, the entire waveform needs to be visible in the
screen. Note: each of the two inputs can be set to a different scale, so the appearance of the waveforms
can sometimes be misleading – always be aware of the scale before drawing any conclusions!!
Time / div: This works just like the Volts / div except it changes the horizontal (time) axis scale. When
examining a particular signal, you should have at least one full period of the lowest frequency wave
visible on screen – adjust the Time / div accordingly during your experiments.
Triggering
The trigger determines when the oscilloscope starts to acquire data and display a waveform. When a
trigger is set up properly, it can convert unstable displays or blank screens into meaningful
waveforms.
Rise Time
When dealing with square or pulse waveforms, the critical feature is the rise time of the
voltage. The rise time of a signal is defined as the time required for it’s leading edge to
rise from 10 percent of it’s final amplitude to 90 percent of it’s final amplitude.
If a signal repeats, it has a frequency. This frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) and
equals the number of times the signal is repeated in one second (cycles per second). The
signal also has a period, which is the time taken for one complete cycle to occur before
it starts to repeat itself.
The Oscilloscope probe grounding strap is exactly that, a ground. Do not connect across a component,
connect the probe from the component to ground.
Phase shift describes the timing difference between two otherwise similar signals. The
example shows two similar sine waves of the same frequency. ‘T’ denotes the period of one complete
cycle (10 cm on screen), and ‘t’ signifies the time between the zero transition point of both signals
(3 cm on screen).
One method for measuring phase shift is to use XY mode. This involves inputting one signal into the
vertical system as usual and then another signal into the horizontal system. (This method only works if
both signals are sine waves.)
This set up is called an XY measurement because both the X and Y axis are tracing voltages. The
waveform resulting from this arrangement is called a Lissajous pattern (named for French physicist
Jules Antoine Lissajous and pronounced LEE-sa-zhoo). From the shape of the Lissajous pattern, you
can tell the phase difference between the two signals. You can also tell their frequency ratio. Figure 6
shows Lissajous patterns for various frequency ratios and phase shifts.
Lissajous Figures Showing Phase Difference
The phase angle or phase shift between X and Y input voltages (after measuring the
distances a and b on the screen) is achieved by following the following formula.
Aliasing. Aliasing occurs when the oscilloscope does not sample the signal fast enough to construct an
accurate waveform record. When aliasing happens, you see a waveform with a frequency lower than
the actual waveform being input or a waveform that is not stable
even though the oscilloscope triggered.
One way to check for aliasing is to slowly change the horizontal scale with the SEC/DIV knob. If the
shape of the waveform changes drastically, you may have aliasing.
To represent a signal accurately and avoid aliasing, you must sample the signal more than twice as fast
as the highest frequency component. For example, a signal with frequency components of 5 MHz
would need to be sampled at 10 Mega-samples per second or faster.

Trigger Control
When the instrument starts acquiring and display a waveform, “trigger” help create
meaningful waveforms from unstable jumbles or blank screen. To access the
triggering controls, press trigger MENU key, the trigger menu will provide the Type,
SOURCE, MODE, or SLOPE/COUPLING soft key to select the features.
Type Edge: Select edge triggering to trigger on the input signal’s edge.
z Auto Level: Press F3 softkey to enable the auto level triggering. In this mode,
the adjusting of “trigger level indicator” will be limited only between the top and
bottom of input waveform. If the “trigger level indicator” adjusted over the range,
the oscilloscope will shift the “trigger level indicator” to the central part of
waveform automatically. External trigger is not support under this mode.
28
GDS-800 Series Digital Storage Oscilloscope Operation Manual
z Auto: In this mode, the oscilloscope will generate an internal trigger in the
absence of other trigger events. Also, select Auto trigger mode when you want
an un-triggered, rolling waveform at 250ms/div or slower timebase settings. This
mode is able to continuously observe low speed phenomena in real time down
to a speed of 10s/div.
z Single: Press F3 softkey to trigger on the next valid trigger event and then stop.
If a trigger is required again, just press the RUN/STOP pushbutton. Signal shot
events are waveforms that happen only once or infrequently. In order to capture
a signal shot events, user needs to have knowledge of the waveform, which is
trying to capture. Before user can setup the trigger, vertical, and horizontal
controls to capture and display event, user must know the approximate
amplitude, duration, and DC offset of the signal.
Trig’d: The oscilloscope displays acquired waveform only after all of the trigger
conditions are met.
Figure 5-13: The absence of triggers for normal and single mode
29
GDS-800 Series Digital Storage Oscilloscope Operation Manual
AUTO: The oscilloscope is in auto mode and trigger conditions are not met.
Figure 5-14: The oscilloscope is in auto mode and trigger conditions are not met
z LF: Press the F3 softkey to enable low frequency reject mode. Low frequency
reject mode removes the low frequency portion of the triggering signal. That
allows only the high frequency components to pass on to the triggering system
and start an acquisition afterward. Low frequency rejection attenuates signals
below 50kHz.
z HF: High frequency reject mode does the opposite of low frequency reject mode.
High frequency rejection attenuates signals above 50kHz.
30
GDS-800 Series Digital Storage Oscilloscope Operation Manual
z Noise Rej On/Off: Press F4 softkey to enable noise reject mode. Noise reject
mode provides lower DC sensitivity. It requires additional signal amplitude for
stable triggering, reducing the change of falsely triggering on noise.
