TAB – Teaching for Artistic Behavior

1. Describe what the TAB learning environment is like for students.

Students are regarded as artists.

They take on the role of artist and come up with and solve art problems. They become self-directed and
organized.

Teaching for artistic behaviors with choices creates a nurturing community of artists.

Everyone is working on different things, so there is less of a tendency to compare themselves to others.
There is freedom of expression and a celebration of achievements.

2. What are some of the key characteristics of a TAB classroom?

Classes begin with a short demonstration or a discussion to inspire new ideas.

Students participate in demonstrations. There is observation and experimentation.

Developmentally appropriate work and differentiation occur regularly.

Students are involved in their own work at their own pace, so the teacher is available to work with
students individually or in small groups.

3. How might TAB be beneficial to students?

Students choose what to work on.

This makes them more excited to work and makes them work harder. They engage more deeply with
their learning.

Students determine the purposes for their work.

They experiment and practice their art skills and learn along the way. This can also help them reach a
wider audience with their art work.

Students learn to reflect on their work.

They are better able to ask questions about and evaluate their work. This helps them talk about and
explain their work to others too.
