The Javan rhino, the Sumatran rhino and the black rhino are now critically
endangered. They are being hunted for their horns, which contain keratin,
the same protein that makes up human hair and fingernails. They are
used in traditional Chinese medicine and carved into jewellery and
trinkets. The horns can be removed without killing these animals, but
poachers always kill the animals anyway.
Although they are large and heavy animals, rhinoceroses are very agile
and can run very fast, even faster than humans can. All rhinoceroses have
grey skin. Rhinoceroses are closely related to horses; both are mammals
that have hooves. Rhinoceroses can become ill-tempered, especially
when their areas are disturbed.
Despite having thick skin, rhinoceroses rely on mud to protect their skin
from pests that bite. That’s why they are always seen soaking in mud for
hours. They also do that to keep themselves cool. They have very poor
eyesight, which is probably why they sometimes charge at things without
any reason. However, their sense of smell and sense of hearing are very
good.
