Tap Changing Transformers in PWS and PSS/E: Power System Operation and Control Laboratory Manual 2

This document provides instructions for a laboratory assignment on modeling tap changing transformers in PSS/E and PWS software. Students are asked to perform manual calculations and simulations in both software packages to evaluate the voltage at Bus 2 for different tap settings on the transformer connecting Bus 1 and 2. The results from the manual calculations and different software are then compared. Students are also asked to model automatic voltage regulation control of the tap changer in PWS.

Tap Changing Transformers in PWS and PSS/E

Course Learning Outcome (CLO):

CLO2: ‘Demonstrate the power system stability and control using software tools’

Task 2-a
Reading Material: Article # 6.7, Chapter 6: “Power Flow Analysis”, Book: “Power System
Analysis by Hadi Sadaat”.

The network is given as under for which calculations are to be performed.

Regulating Transformer Calculations

Evaluate the voltage at Bus 2 (using Gauss-Seidel Technique) for various tap settings as given
below.

Using PWS

• Draw the One-line diagram in PWS.

• In the Edit Mode, go to Draw → Field →
Transformer Field.

Manual Control

• Now click on the transformer on which you

want to have the tap changer. A Dialog box
will open. In ‘type of field’ option, select
‘off-nominal Tap Ratio’ (PWS connects
the tap changer on the ‘from’ side of the
transformer) e.g., if a transformer is
connected from bus 1 to bus 2, PWS will
attach taps on the winding which is
connected to bus 1 and if the transformer is
connected from 2 to 1, PWS will attach taps
on the winding which is connected to bus
2. Corroborate your theoretical
calculations of YBus and V2 with the PWS
results for different tap changing
transformation ratios.

Automatic Control:

Double click on the transformer, in the transformer

control, check ‘automatic control enabled’ and in
the ‘change Automatic Control Options’ select
‘Voltage Regulation’ as automatic control type.
(Dialog Box is shown in the adjacent figure.)

When Transformer Tap Control is on automatic

control then tap changing symbol is drawn on the tap-changing side of the transformer as shown
in network below. In this network, the ‘From’ bus is 1, ‘To’ bus is 2 and thus tap is attached on the
bus 1 (From Bus) of the transformer. The automatic control settings are such that taps are set to
make voltage at bus 2 equal to 1 p.u.

Using PSS/E

Consult article ‘Modeling of Two-Winding Voltage Regulating Transformers for Positive

Sequence Load Flow Analysis in PSS/E’ uploaded on Piazza Group as Lab2_Reference’.

Assignment

• Perform the above-mentioned calculations (Part 1 – Part 5) using Newton Raphson

Method.
• Attach results of PSS/E and PWS.
