INTERESTING LAKES AROUND THE WORLD
Five Flower Lake:
Five Flower lake is such a beautiful lake which locates in China’s Jiuzhaigu National Park. It covers an area of 90.000 square meters and an average water depth of 5 meters with a beautiful landscape. Why is it called Five Flower Lake? Because of the travertines on the lake floor, various colorful minerals and the difference of fossilized plants, they all have formed many colorful color blocks in the bottom of the lake, such as royal blue, emerald green, orange yellow and light red, so as flowers represent colors, it is called Five Flower Lake.
Lake Baikal:
Lake Baikal is the deepest and oldest lake in the
world, and the largest freshwater lake by volume. It's not the biggest lake in the world in size because the biggest lake is the salty Caspian Sea but when we compare them in volume, Lake Baikal takes the lead. Lake Baikal locates in Russia. Origins of the word ‘Baikal’ comes from Turkish tribes who live around the lake and it means ‘big lake/sea’. The lake holds 20 percent of drinkable water in the world. And its famous for its crystal-clear waters and unique wildlife. The lake is under threat by pollution and illegal hunting. In 1996 UNESCO declared Lake Baikal a World Heritage Site.
Aral Lake:
Aral Lake takes place between Kazakhstan and
Uzbekistan. It was once the 4th largest lake in the world with an area of 68.000 km square. Most interesting but sad fact about this lake is that, the lake has been drying up since 1960’s when companies have started cotton farming near the rivers that feed the lake. As a result of cotton farming rivers have dried up so the lake has started to get smaller in size day by day and has lost 90 percent of its original amount of water. Eventually at 2003 the lake separated in to 2 parts: West and East Aral Lake. History of Aral Lake, previously called Aral Sea, shows us how human actions may deeply harm nature.
Boiling Lake:
Boiling lake locates in Morne Trois Pitons
National Park on the island of Dominica. The lake is filled with bubbling grayish blue water surrounded by a cloud of steam. Lake’s water level changed over time due to the explosions under water. In 2005, water level decreased about 33 feet but it fully filled by rain and its streams in a short time. Sad news for the nature lovers, there is no direct road to the lake, it is about 13km return hike to the lake from the nearest road. Even if you dare to hike, it is impossible to get closer due to the heat. Temperature of the lake area can rise up to 93 Celsius degree.
