Frequency, Period and Time: Electrical Engineering Technology Department

This document discusses frequency, period, and time as they relate to alternating current. It defines frequency as the number of cycles per second, measured in hertz (Hz). Period is defined as the amount of time for one cycle to complete and is the reciprocal of frequency. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating frequency from period and period from frequency. The document concludes with practice problems calculating unknown frequencies or periods given values for the other.

Title: Frequency, Period and Time

Introduction

When a sine wave of alternating voltage is connected across a load, the current that flows
in the circuit is also a sine wave.

Frequency and Period

The number of cycles per second is called frequency, it is indicated by the symbol f and is
expressed in hertz (Hz). One cycle per second equals o one hertz, thus 60 cycle per second
equals to 60 hertz. The amount of time for the completion of 1 cycle is period. It is indicated
by the symbol T for time and is expressed second (s). Frequency and period are reciprocals
of each other.
