It defines diversity as understanding that each individual is unique and recognizing differences while also practicing mutual respect for qualities different from our own. It notes diversity includes differences in age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities, race, orientation and other attributes. It then discusses Loden's Diversity Wheel model which depicts the inner core of unchangeable attributes and outer sphere of attributes with some control. UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY

What is diversity ?

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing
our individual differences.
"Diversity" means more than just acknowledging and/or tolerating difference. Diversity is a set of conscious practices that involve:

 Understanding and appreciating interdependence of humanity, cultures, and the natural environment.
 Practicing mutual respect for qualities and experiences that are different from our own.
 Understanding that diversity includes not only ways of being but also ways of knowing;
 Recognizing that personal, cultural and institutionalized discrimination creates and sustains privileges for some while creating
and sustaining disadvantages for others;
 Building alliances across differences so that we can work together to eradicate all forms of discrimination.

Diversity includes, therefore, knowing how to relate to those qualities and conditions that are different from our own and outside
the groups to which we belong, yet are present in other individuals and groups. These include but are not limited to age, ethnicity,
class, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, as well as religious status, gender expression, educational
background, geographical location, income, marital status, parental status, and work experiences. Finally, we acknowledge that
categories of difference are not always fixed but also can be fluid, we respect individual rights to self-identification, and we
recognize that no one culture is intrinsically superior to another.

LODEN’S DIVERSITY WHEEL

 In 1990, Marilyn Loden and Judy Rosener

developed a framework for thinking about the
different dimensions of diversity within
individuals and institutions.  Depicted as
concentric circles, this “Diversity Wheel” can be
used in many different ways to encourage
thinking about values, beliefs, and dimensions
of identity for people and organizations.

Loden defines RICR as:
•RESPECT: treating others as they wish to be
treated;
•INCLUSION: making certain everyone on the
team is truly a part of the team decision-making
process;
•COOPERATION: actively helping others succeed
rather than competing or attempting to one-up
someone;
•RESPONSIBILITY: managing personal behavior
to maintain a diversity-positive environment and
questioning inappropriate behavior when it
occurs.

Inner Embbed Sphere- which we have no control over as we born with these aspects of diversity.

Outer Sphere- which we have some control over and which may or may not change over time.

ABILITY AND DISABILITY AS A DIMENSION OF DIVERSITY

Ability and Disability Diversity- a variety of all types of talents and limits of a person.

Ability is the resources to perform well at something, while disability is the limits or challenges a person faces. Having a
variety of talents and limits in a workforce is called ability and disability diversity.

A disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Specifically, a
qualified individual with a disability is someone who can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable
accommodation
